Good Questions: Wallpaper Expert in Brooklyn?

8-8-hanna.jpgDear AT,

I am planning on wallpapering our walls with the awesome new Hanna Werning patterns (ours is at left) that we found through AT's top 10 Wallpaper list, but now we need a wallpaper person to put them up.

The wallpaper comes in sheets, was purchased through Paypal and sent to us from Sweden. No one we know in Brooklyn has wallpapered lately. Are we the only ones? Do you have a recommendation for a wallpaper expert in Brooklyn?

Thank you, Arlo

Dear Arlo,

Good question. While we don't know someone right now, guaranteed that with the wallpaper trend picking up, we will be flooded with references in the next few years.

We would give Kyra and Robertson Hartnett of Twenty2 a call and ask them. They make beautiful wallpaper and live and work in Brooklyn.

Anyone else??

Try searching for "paper hangers", the proper term for, well, paper hangers. :)

I'm in the midst of planning to wallpaper also. It's just a small wall so I thought I'd do it myself. It looked kind of easy, but maybe I'm in over my head. I'm in Brooklyn, too, so if you find someone, I'd love to hear who and how it went. Thanks.

In the Russian community wallpapering never went out of fashion. My mom's good friend had her place papered and painted in B'klyn by this painter Tom and she swears by him and his workers. Said he was extemely clean, prompt, thorough, clean.

Rare Device in Park Slope sells Hanna Werning papers. Perhaps they have referrals for paper hangers...

Dare I say it...If it's a small square space, you can do it yourself if you're a first timer. Wallpapering is daunting, but not difficult. And it can be expensive to hire someone.

I've done it before and was trying to write out a how to, but it's taking too long. If you're interested, get a how to book, and do a mock up. Like try to wallpaper the inside of a box with some newspaper before you try the real thing.

A few tips:
It can be messy it's important to work quickly and cleanly. So always have clean water available.
Test the actual wallpaper for shrinkage, some papers can shrink slightly when the paper dries.
Change your cutting tool blade often.

Good luck!

I just removed some very old wallpaper, I have no idea how old. It came off quite easily in sheets seperated by seams-it was vinyl. I expected the normal tan backing paper under it. What I found was tan but very rough and brittle. I could pick it off in flakes with a finger nail but nothing like paper. What is this stuff and what do I do about it if I want to repaper or paint over it....my wife hasn't made a decision yet.

I have an Ebay store that sells The Border Buddie. It is great for someone trying to hang borders by themselves. www.amazingsolutions.biz

Woah!! Wallpaper is Back and rrealy never left the scene. People stopped putting wallpaper up....Becasue you could not get it off.
Now you can with the new NON WOVEN Papers.
You have to ask your wallpaper and Paint stores for them by name. Non woven. They strip right off the wall and can be repasted and then re installed. Go to our WEB SITE
www.NGPP.ORG and key in your zip code and BOOM, you have a professional paperhanger.
When you have papers that look this awesome. Why would anyone just paint? The papers are amazing now.

I recently used Dow Kowalczyk of Dow and Company (Brooklyn-based) to wallpaper my guest bath and recommend him. He did a meticulous job, was very reliable and a great communicator. He's at DowCompany@aol.com.

I too used Dow Kowalczyk of Dow and Company for a recent job. I highly recommend him and his team. It was easy to coordinate, he did extra research for us, helped us look at all of the ways we could complete the job, and in the end the job turned out just perfect. If only every experience with a contractor was this easy!!

He is at dowcompany@aol.com.

We also used Dow and Company. I only wish we'd had as good an experience as others on this forum.
He and his crew were consistently late, which really held us up. Maybe we should have seen this coming considering Dow was late when keeping our appointment for the initial estimate. His prices seemed on the high side, but he was a good talker, very smooth, and had received glowing reviews on this forum.
The overall quality of the work was just okay. Didn't seem worth prices this high and the aggravation of me or my wife having to wait around for him or his team to arrive each and every day of the job. We have more paper to hang this spring, and plan to try someone else.
