Good Questions: What Chairs for This Table?

1-17-tableiron.jpgHello AT,

Hello, I am desperate. I was handed down a 48" round bevelled glass top, wrought iron base table. I was planning to use it as a dining room table. My decor is influenced by Hollywood Regency/French Art Deco. Think Barbara Barry. My color scheme is brown/taupe/blue. Most of my furniture is walnut. I live in a 2-story condo with an open floor plan. so the ceiling is very high. Walls are an ice blue. So my dilemma is chairs for this table...

I'm thinking something upholstered like this.

But the Jonathan Adler Chinese Chippendale Chair in dove is appealing too.

But I am open to any ideas as I am at my wits end!

Thank you for any deas!

Jennifer (Wash., DC)

Dear Jennifer,

The first ones, Martine Upholstered Dining Chairs, hands down.

Anyone else?

I agree- you need something upholstered to make the table feel less cold (get one JA chippendale as an accent somewhere else in the room...they're great, but expensive!).
I do think the Martine chairs could be too big. What about something like this:

I feel like a lot of people sell slipper/parson chairs on craigslist.

Since you mentioned Barbara Barry, why not try to find some oval-backed chairs like the ones Barry makes? They need not be an exact match: Any sort of Deco-inspired chair with some upholstery would work, I think. (From bitter experience, it's better to get chairs you can easily upholster with a staple gun by yourself -- I'm still waiting to save $3K to get my good chairs done up correctly.)

Other than that, I can tell you that I think almost any chair would complement your table -- it is very beautiful and -- I think -- versatile.

I think something like this would be great; http://www.ballarddesigns.com/jump.jsp?itemID=4592&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C4%2C24%2C135&iProductID=4592

maybe a little glammed up with pleats or a frog closure in back

you could easily make them if you're able to use a sewing machine.

Yes the RH Martine in brown velvet. Perfect.

Yep, Martine works beautifully Suggest a color that works well with your furniture, as these would be great extra seating- drag 'em out from the table for a crowd in your living room etc. Very fetch.
Cheers Hon

Hi all! I'm the owner of the table. Thank you all so very much for your wonderful suggestions. I just may have to buy every chair you all recommended. I'm not kidding. In fact, I am in the process of replacing my sofa, so my living room may just have to be all chairs, my coffee table and TV. My sincere thanks, you all are wonderful and have done me such an enormous service! Best, Jennifer

On a different track altogether, what about the curvy Panton molded chair?

I would go as far away from those curled legs as possible as you will never find anything to match and the bases will just look untidy. http://www.anthropologie.com/jump.jsp?itemID=12883&itemType=PRODUCT&iSubCat=443&iMainCat=371 try this link - a chair from anthropologie that has a removable slip cover the same colour as the table legs.
