Hello AT,
Pottery Barn...yes, a necessary evil. I recently caved and bought their Seabury Sofa, in the basketweave ivory fabric, extra long. I love the clean lines and sophisticated look of the sofa, and that it is a perfect blend of contemporary and traditional...

I am thinking that I want to put two cool chairs facing the sofa, that are a bit more eclectic. But, I live in a traditional boston brownstone and don't want to fight with the natural decor of the place.
Any tips on size, shape, proportion for the chairs?
Thanks, Abby
Dear Abby,
Because the Seabury is a carefully designed and updated version of a classic, you can put a great deal with it. You can go modern, contemporary and even traditional. The only place you will want to be careful is with the fabric. Here we would stay strictly contemporary/modern and avoid patterns or gaudy colors.
We're going to start you off with two of our favorite chairs (and one more) and hope that others jump in:
• The Elliot Chair by Mitchell Gold. This small scale and lovely design would fit in perfectly and not take up any space (if that's a consideration).
• English Roll Arm from Restoration Hardware. We have a soft spot for this chair because it is just so damn comfortable. With the right fabric, you can tie it in. Warning: it's big.
• The Cameron Chair from Room and Board - just nice.
Anyone else?
How about these two, in different fabric?

i actually disagree with introducing more upholstered pieces...i think you should break things up a bit and keep with a Hollywood Regency look. its both classic and modern. what about trying some cane/rattan/bamboo club style chairs?

(these would look great with some rad botanical fabric)

(these would be great, but i'd change the fabric to keep from being too beige)
or if you really want something cushy, try this:

(re-upholstered, of course)
i just think all the stuff Maxwell suggested mirrors the couch too much.

try these:
camille chair or dandelion on pg 4 http://www.zgallerie.com/shop/search/results.asp?searchfor=Chairs&searchin=FUR
with such a blank canvas for a couch (white assuming) a great bold color and pattern would be great, like teal paisley

I agree with goodnightdean. I adore the first set of cane chairs but maybe not with botanical fabric--could be way too summer house. Hollywood Regency is hard to go wrong with.
But if you hang out in your living room all the time and want comfort more than chic design, the Restoration Hardware chair is glorious. You'll move into it. Their linen upholstery keeps such a nice, crisp look. Careful accessories in more modern fabrics will shift the thing away from the traditional.

I think you also have to consider the function of the chairs, not just the design. Will these be for casual entertaining/lounging/reading (in which case you may want a soft, roll-arm chair you can sink into) or more formal entertaining/occasional use (in which case you want something a bit stiffer that guests can get in and out of easily, and not necessarily upholstered).

Either something VERY similar in silhouette, but either a pattern, leather, or some color drastically different than the sofa, or something very DISsimilar in silhouette, but in a related fabric (so, in this case, perhaps an ivory leather or velvet).
But as long as you (roughly) match the seat heights of chairs and sofas, you can't go too terribly wrong with that sofa.
Here's one of my favorite chairs these days:

I also like the chairs at Williams Sonoma Home.
But please don't call Pottery Barn a "necessary evil."

I like Pottery Barn, for the most part. What about leather club-style chairs? A couple of manufacturers make them, and I imagine they would look great in a brownstone.

Abby,
I would try some classic Barbara Barry styles -- definitely eye catching but with very clean lines, and also the perfect balance between upholstery and wood. My personal favorites are:

Also, as a fellow Bostonian, living in a Back Bay brownstone, I have to ask you whether you had to fit the extra long Seabury through the window?! I have had a hell of a time finding furniture that can get through my the super narrow stairways.
Good luck finding the perfect chairs to go with that awesome sofa!

Try something from Gus or Bobby Berk Home. They have great modern and mid-century modern chairs

I'd actually considered purchasing the Putnam and the Grant chairs (suggested by Patrick) at Room and Board. Unfortunately, they were not that comfortable.

Have you looked at Dreyton from Drexel Heritagehttp://www.drexelheritage.com/furniture/items/3439/index.html? I have these in my living room and sit in them all the time. I think they were meant for dining, but they are great chairs both for style and for comfort. I also love the fact that you can order them slipcovered.
