Good Questions: What Color Chair Goes with this Sofa?

8.21sofa.jpgHello AT,

I just bought this sofa and need advice about what color chair would go with it. I have a fabric single seat sofa that needs recovering, but can't figure out what fabric would work....

The sofa and chair will be going with a solid black / charcoal rug.

Thanks! Matt

Anyone?

This is impossible to answer without seeing the room it's in. And it's a pretty ugly color leather... perhaps it would make sense to upholster these cushions in the same fabric as the other couch.

Its a great colour leather - just the same colour as my sofa as it happens, but that's by the bye...

I think with that couch and a black rug, you could basically have any color chair you wanted. Which obviously isn't much help, but seriously anything would go. Just look for a fabric you really like.

I like the brown. I'm seeing it with blue--a cadet blue--and maybe some cream throws.

I think that the room should have navy blue, coffee, and a purplish eggplant color for accents. These colors would enhance the warmth of the sofa, and you can find a lot of great things to work with in those colors. The sofa reminds me of Richard Neutra's architecture, and taking guidance from his emphasis on linear and horizontal symmetries might be a nice thing to think about.

If you had those color shoes, and were wearing them with charcoal pants, what color shirt would you wear?

There is a fabric I just saw in the Ethan Allen catalogue that I think would look amazing, but unfortunately it's not on their website. It may not be your style, but it's a subtle and warm blend of copper, cream, eggplant, terra cotta, goldenrod, some burgundy, and sage green, all in a paisley pattern. It's frequently shown in their paper catalogue, if you could track one down.

I like the color of the couch! I have an Ikea Tullsta barrel chair in that orangish/brown color and I have it paired with a cream sofa and orange and green accents throughout the room. If I had your sofa and a charcoal rug I would also be tempted to upholster the chair in a mod charcoal/black/beige pattern or perhaps even an animal print. OR I would do the chair in a neutral beige fabric and then get some fun throw pillows in a black/charcoal/white pattern to tie everything together. In my mind this would create a fairly mod look but I would love it!

I also have to say that the color of your sofa (and my chair) remind me of a leather jacket my Dad had in the 1970's! My Mother used to call it "baby poop brown" but my Dad looked pretty darn rockin' in it!

If you haven't bought your rug yet I would highly recommend the charcoal over the black. I had a black rug once and I swear it attracted every single bit of light-colored dirt and lint in the whole house! I had to vacuum it more than my beige carpet.

I think the texture of the chair is more important than the actual color--a nubby tweed works for me.

maybe take a look at supershoppertoo's living room, she has a similar coloured couch and i really like the two colour schemes she uses there.
