Good Questions: What is the chandelier in Stranger than Fiction?

11-14-acorn.jpgHello AT,
I just got home from seeing Stranger than Fiction and in it Maggie Gyllenhaal's character has this amazing stain glass-esque chandelier over her dining room table. Anyone seen it? Any ideas were I could find something similar?
Thanks!!
Chelsea

Anyone? Because I know someone will ask, the acorn chandelier in the picture is available here. —aaron

I also went to see that movie over the weekend and have been jumping around forums ever since trying to find out where those lamps in that characters apartment are from! I've also tirelessly dug through every lamp store I could find on line, but to no avail.
I was completely captivated by every single lamp in that apartment (and there are many). I don't remember the last time I've been this inspired, however, I have not been able to find any leads to any of them.
I guess it's not at all ironic that the question came up on AT :)
So I too would really appreciate any input on this subject.

I once tracked down the set designer from "Pretty in Pink" because I wanted to buy the armoire that was in Molly's bedroom (I have a similar/matching bed in storage). She was really very nice and helped me out as much as she could with names/numbers. This was almost pre-Ebay at the time so it didn't get auctioned off for charity like the studios tend to do now...I'm babbling. Hope that helped, in an abstract kind of way. LOL SUMMARY: Seek out the set designer.

Set designers: Kerry Sanders and Ford Wheeler.

posted by Jean on 2006-11-14 14:41:36

I tried that rout too. Found the name of the set designer, but have yet to find useful contact info. To further complicate the matter, this movie has a Set Decorator (Ford Wheeler) AND a Set Designer (Kerry Sanders). So not sure which one would apply.

Oh I just wanted to add that I too loved the movie and especially the design descision for each character's home/work space.

However I was most inspired by the sparsity in Emma Thompon and Will Ferrel character's spaces and thankfully left the theatre detemined to sell and not acquire.

I too was completely stunned by the stained glass light fixture(s). I would ask anyone who figures out where to purchase this or can even provide a photo of this to please let me know! I can't remember the last time I wanted something so much...Patricia

I also loved the stained glass chandelier. I did find the Set Designer, Kerry Sanders' email address and wrote to him.

He wrote back and said that he forwarded my email to the Set Decorator, Ford Wheeler. Kerry wrote that Ford was a real nice guy and would surely be willing to help.

I have not heard anything back from Ford Wheeler and it has been more than 2 weeks. I saw on his film profile that he is working on a new movie right now so maybe he is too busy to respond to this type of question.

I am so glad I found this website! I have been looking for the same information! You guys have been really helpful, If you do happen to hear back from Ford Wheeler on the lamps please let us know! :)

I want the light as well. I am usally pretty good at finding things on the web, but am having no luck what so ever at finding this light. The fiance is in love with the multi colored glass fixture.

I hope some one finds something out.

Can anyone even find an image of this light?

Golly, I'm here in Bedford, UK, and googled for info on the wonderful apartment furnishings in this great movie...and found myself here! I do hope someone tracks something down...aside from the multi-coloured chandelier, I loved the settee/sofa, and of course the bed.Any clues welcome.Happy Christmas from our little over crowded isle. Mike.

If it is the sofa I am thinking about, try DWR.com (Design Within Reach) They have it.

I like the brass headboard on the bed in Maggie Gyllenhaal's apartment in 'Stranger Than Fiction.' Does anyone know where I can get it?

This movie really did inspire a lot of decorator choices! I am interested in the high ladder back chairs that she had at her dining table. Any ideas?

Has anyone found the chandelier yet? I'm still craving it...

posted by Laura on 2007-01-19 14:10:32

Maybe if whoever had Ford Wheeler's e-mail address could give it to the rest of us and then we could all e-mail him. Perhaps that would get his attention? I have also been completely obsessed with that chandelier ever since I saw Stranger Than Fiction. Hopefully it's not an incredibly expensive, one of a kind antique. If someone can find it eventually, please let the rest of us know even if there are no more of them in the whole world.

Keiko and other seekers of the Glorious Chandelier,

I can't track down Ford Wheeler's email address, but I did buy a premium subscription to imdb.com for the sole purpose of getting his agent's email. I emailed her a week ago and haven't heard back, but if you want to try too: it's rebecca at lspagency dot net.

I wish I could think of anything else to try, cause this chandelier is still haunting me.

I've spent hours trying to find that chandelier without much luck - but I just found this site which has a bunch of very interesting, unique designs. http://www.eco-lights.com/

I too have been searching like a mad woman on so many websites for that chandaleir. I thought tiffany lighting would help but not so. keep up the blogs and chats til we find that infamous light.

posted by yvonne on 2007-03-12 20:56:24

I am so in love with all of the lighting, but the chandelier is the most beautiful thing I have seen. I am at work now and when I get home I am going to try to take a picture of it off my my hd tv screen so that we at least have something to go by.

I, too, was bug-eyed and salivating over Maggie Gyllenaal's character's stained glass chandelier. I snapped 5 crude pictures of it right off the television. If anyone wants them, let me know. Any luck with Ford Wheeler?

We, too, are looking for the chandelier. From the best we can tell, it appears to be a Moroccan hanging latern. But we've not been able to find the exact one yet.....still looking.

Not good news: I e-mailed Ford Wheeler, and he e-mailed me back to let me know that fixture is a one-of-a-kind vintage fixture, and doesn't know the manufacturer or where to find another. BUMMER. I also saw the movie and decided I HAD to have that fixture.... :(

I just watched the movie last night and loved it! I also fell in love with that mezmerizing beautiful colorful glass chandelier!
OK, so it is one of a kind - I figured that, but if there was some way to make a reproduction of it - that would be fine with me. To think that beautiful chandelier is now packed away site unseen in some stuffy Hollowood Prop Warehouse.
What a shame.

Nice to know that I am not the only crazed person searching all over the internet for that chandelier. How was anyone able to email Ford Wheeler? You people are good!!! I was obssessed with that chandelier the moment it appeared on the screen. Has anyone found anything similar to it? If we could get a good snapshot of it, maybe we could persuade a manufacturer to reproduce it. I am so disappointed to hearit's one-of-a-kind. Do we give up?

How great it is to find a bunch of people who noticed that amazing light fitting. Who needs a matchmaking site when I have found my true love in that stunning chandelier!!! There's an incredible and well known chandelier maker who is famous for making chandelier's from pics. So I'm going to take some photo's off the tv screen of the light and take it into him. If it's a goer, I'll let you all know. Fingers crossed. I'm in melbourne Australia by the way.

This is so funny...and great! Not only did the chandelier grab my attention, like so many of you - but does anyone know about the sheets she mixed and matched on her bed, as well as the pendant-like fixture hanging from the ceiling behind her bed?? I am obsessed!
Thanks for any help in advance!
PS - Kerry Sanders and Ford Wheeler did such a wonderful job they have all of us clamoring to recreate!!!

My daughter and I also are huge fans of that chandelier and it's fantastic jewel-like quality. Those of you with the hot leads (hello Australia!), please keep us up to date with your progress in finding a facsimile! Thank you to everyone, especially angela315 for tracking down Ford Wheeler. With all the same-same out there on the market a unique (to us dozen fanatics for the piece) fixture would be a treasure.

PS The film is worthy of mention, too. Quirky and sweet. The "I brought you flours" scene and those that follow are the best of Hollywood romance.

It's been since Feb....anyone find anything out?
I am still thinking of everything -the bed, the sheets, the pendant lamp..!
Does the person who has Ford Wheeler's address feel comfortable giving it out? I would like to ask him about the other items I am craving!
Thanks!!!
