Good Questions: What Is This Chair?

4-6--questions.jpg

Hello AT,

I've been trying to figure out who makes this chair for ages. I found this image at hybrid-home.com and I'm sending it to AT in hopes that someone out there has an answer. Please solve this mystery!

Thanks, Cuse

Dear Cuse,

These look so familiar, but we can't name them. We suspect they are American 60's, vintage and no longer in production, but we could be wrong.

Anyone have a lifeline here??

The person who would know is Mod Mom!

Saarinen? It looks like one but on Thonet legs.

That open back is Knoll, for sure. The legs, I'm not so sure about. Despite the fact they look great, I'm not sure they're original. (I've only ever seen those chairs on zinc legs.) Going to keep looking...

If that's not Saarinen, then someone needs to be sending royalties somewhere.

Saarinen ('Executive Chair with Wood Legs') *for* Knoll, even better! Here's a picture of the wooden-legged--though armless--version from the Knoll website:

Hope that narrows your search down a bit...

I agree - forget the chairs - where is that fantastic fan table from?

MMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm

Rasil,

That's the Richard Schultz Petal table you are coveting.

these are definitely the saarinen exec chairs--he made them w/bent plywood legs, which looks so much nicer than the metal. I know b/c i actually have a pair that i might part with....that need to be re-upholstered. the internal shell is fiberglas, which is really cool.

thanks, reef! AT is really great.

i like top of the table a lot, less keen on the metal base (which seems to me a different style than the prettiness of the mahoghany top), and as for not being able to dl the prices unless you register....................

Definitely original. My grandparents have four of these (with the wood legs) in white leather...yummy.

I often see the zinc legged version of these at flee markets for very reasonable prices (less than $40 down here in Texas). I think this chair has been over-looked by the hip mod vintage furniture mavens. Maybe I should start stocking up and selling them off on E-Bay.

Modmom just called for the answers, (thank you very much for the questions) but, as it was pointed out above, they are the wooden leg versions of the saarinen chairs, and then reupholstered in white. And for even more info, austinjohn, these were bought in Denton Texas 12+ years ago when we were in college. So, yes, you can still find them cheap! In Austin, the Addams Extracts building on S. I-35 is the greatest building around.

I own one of these! Was purchased on ebay last year for $80 and is in serious need of recovering. What I don't know is: what colors/fabric/leather did it originally come in AND did they make a model sans back opening? I wonder if someone has upholstered over it...
