apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: What Should I Do With This Space?

8.20wall.jpgHello AT,

Here's a little section of my apartment between my bed and my closet. It's blank, it's boring, it's ugly, it has got to change.

I found this awesome 1930's art deco console radio in the local classifieds, but it was an inch too big to fit. I want to do something with this space in that direction- ie, put some media player preferably but I don't care too deeply.

I'm not putting in a TV because I can't afford cable and no bookcases; I have plenty of those...

I really wanted to go for a console radio but most of them are just too large. The space is about 23" wide before it hits my closet.

Here's a picture with the closet open and with the blinds (or whatever those things are) closed for an idea of how the space looks.

What can I do with this ugly little void?

Thanks! August

Anyone?

try world market or some similar place for a nice buddha statue, or something of that nature.

just a thought.

Heh...somehow, between the time this originally went up and now, the bulletproof vest in the closet and the pile of laundry on the bed disappeared. At any rate, what about one of those stylish valet chairs/stands? Some nice ones here: http://www.onewayfurniture.com/butler-valet-stands.html

not sure of the depth you have, but: a pedestal and statue (or plant or vase of flowers).

an obi and obi hanger (you can develop a collection of narrow textiles and rotate.

a bedside lamp and a stack of books and magazines (the latter perhaps in a basket)

a child's chair

a silent butler (always useful near a closet)

August,

I'll buy your console radio, if you are plan on looking for a smaller one.

Interesting ideas thus far, but I'd like to take exception with buying statues of the Buddha to fill space. It IS a religious symbol, and not a coffee table book. If August has any real interest in Buddhism, the Buddha's presence would presumably merit a more prominent position.

This was asked and answered on the AT-LA site last week on Aug 17. http://la.apartmenttherapy.com/la/good-questions/good-question-what-to-put-at-the-foot-of-the-bed-030088#comments

Lucky August, I'm still waiting for the Good Question I sent a few months ago to show up.

I don't really understand what's so awful about having an empty corner here. It seems like the space would look even more awkward with something crammed in it.

But anyway, if you really can't stand the empty space I'd get one of those cylindrical fish tanks like this, or a tall, skinny plant that won't be sticking leaves in your face.

Lisa from VA: Damn, I guess I shouldn't hold my breath waiting for the (seasonally sensistive) question I submitted a week or two ago.

If you want to add some color, a ceramic umbrella stand would work. You could put something tall, like reeds. Ceramic umbrella stands come in solids as well as some patterns. I seem to see interesting ones every time I go to Homegoods.

In Buddhism we have a saying, if you see a Buddha on the road, kill it.

I appreciate your sensitivity, but icons do not have quite the same weight in Buddhism as they have in some other belief systems.

i wouldn't put anything in that space. unless you really have the teensiest apartment and that's prime real estate, i'd just let it be empty. empty space is good. mmmhmmm.

Maybe a little shelf with a vase on it?

This is the space at the end of your bed, in front of your closet, correct?

Honestly, I don't see any reason why you would need to have anything there. It's nice to have a little breathing room between walls and objects.

I'm confused. What space? There is no space there.

Leave it empty. Just put some nice bedding on your bed and call it a day. Anything placed there will be tripped over when getting in or out of bed or going into the closet.

I'm with Peggy. It seems that you want to put something in front of your closet door? Just leave it empty. You don't want to draw attention to a narrow space like that. Get some great bed linens, put some art over the headboard, leave this little space alone.

Lisa and engineergirl, I am now losing hope. I submitted a Good Question months ago and it was posted right away. I submitted another this week (one that is time-sensitive), and after reading your posts, I wonder if I will ever see it here.

What a truly bizarre question ... next we'll all be discussing what best to put in the 1/4" space between the counter and the stove...

Hi all, August here

To clear a few things up and answer some questions:

My bedding was in the laundry when I took the photo. I have the grey Brunkskrilla set from Ikea; it's really nice.

The picture is compressed horizontally so it looks even less so. It's actually not too bad widthwise, as it is at the foot of my bed so anything there isn't really in the way, and that end of the closet just has some boxes so it isn't blocking anything.

I know some think there isn't any room there but it's the first thing you see when you walk into the bedroom. My apartment is -tiny- so all avaliable square footage is important. I really wanted that damned radio but, well, you know how life does

Even with that info, I think it would be a mistake to fill this space. There's no reason to draw attention to this area. If you must do something, make it tall and skinny, like tall plant, or a tall sculptural lamp (IKEA has some paper shade floor lamps that are cheap and look decent).

Or, how about a tall/narrow bookshelf holding a collection of something you like? I'm not sure if the console radio you wanted to put there was a vintage radio - I love vintage radios, and have a collection of small ones.

if the person with the question is a woman, I'd say how about an antique or old dress maker's dummy? you could put your bathrobe on it or something nice.

I saw one once in a junk shop and didn't get it, still kicking myself....

Yeah, then you'd have a place for the bulletproof vest.

I'd do a long wall-hanging or piece of art, especially if this is the first thing you see.

Maybe something like:

In my opinion, you probably need that narrow skinny space to access your closet. why not just fill it visually by putting a framed narrow poster or piece of art on the wall and/or a nice rug that can extend under your bed. I had a similar issue and thats what i did!
