apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: What Would You Do With This Bathroom?

Hi! My husband and I are closing on a condo with plenty of potential but right now it's hard on the eyes (70s wallpaper in every room, avocado green bathroom, etc.). We'll have about 6 weeks to renovate before we move. What would you do with this bathroom? I wanted to go with aqua but those two colors won't work well together. I know we're removing the wallpaper, repainting and doing something with the mirror/medicine cabinet situation... Options listed after the jump.

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first. Email questions and pics with QUESTIONS in subject line to: newyork(at)apartmenttherapy(dot)com)

Options:
1. Leave the green alone and try to coordinate in some way.
2. Reglazing the fixtures.
3. Replacing everything.
4. Other suggestions?

Thank you for your help. Jen

leave the green be. You can actually find a good many modern fabrics that use that green and combine with aqua.

The first thing to do would definitely be straightening the floor to horizontal position.

I like the tub/tile combo! Replace the sink and toilet if you can and enjoy the tub.

Reglaze the tiles, replace the tub/toilet & Sink, remove the Dated medicine cabinet and the horrible wall paper-- with a clean pallette you can do sooo much more PLUS will help reslae value a TON and is lett expensive then a full demo... Also I would splurge on either a vessel sink or granite for the sink to bring it up to par

You could go with a tiki/safari "theme" in the bathroom...

The matching green toilet & sink are a bit of an eyesore - if you only have budget to replace them, I'd go for it. You could maybe get away with just the tub. Oh, and the border totally doesn't match. Nix that right away.

Reglaze the tiles and tub. Replace the vanity, toilet, flooring, and update the lighting. I like the horizontal medicine cabinet but can't tell if it's attached to the mirror. If so, update both of those. These are all small fixes that will add a lot of value to your condo.

1. replace that toilet seat!
2. replace the floors with nice, small-ish tiles. either all white or maybe black and white.
3. when you get rid of the wallpaper, just paint it a soft white so it's clean, simple and airy.
4. that counter is horrendous (worse that the sink itself). it looks cheap and out of place in the rest of the room. maybe just rip the whole thing out and get a pedestal sink.

Have the tub and tile reglazed in white, replace the toilet as it's so old it's likely a water waster, replace the vanity and sink, replace the mirror medicine cabinet, remove the wallpaper and paint, remove vinyl floor and replace with tile. With all white fixtures you can use aqua or any other color you want.

Last year I redid my similar looking bathroom. Everything was nasty yellow tile and the fixtures were off white. I decided to demolish the whole thing for about $1500. I ripped out everything on my own then had a contractor come in and re-drywall, put in the tub and install the vanity and sink. I didn't use the cheapest stuff and everything looks really good. I painted and installed the toilet myself to save money. It looks really nice and was pretty cheap. If I were you I would just start from scratch. You'll be much happier than if you try to make due.

I think the tub, toilet, and sink look perfectly nice. They actually work well with the beige shower tile and the wood toilet seat.

I would do a few things:
1) Remove the decorative wallpaper border in the shower.
2) Replace the toilet knob and all other fixtures with ones that blend in better, perhaps in medium or dark oil-rubbed bronze.
3) Replace the sink vanity (but not the sink) and fixtures.
4) Replace the floor with tile that coordinates with the shower tile.
5) Repaint the walls in a non-fleshy tone. I think a light coffee color would look pretty with the green

I think the green is actually quite restful and soothing. You just need to have fewer fleshy/peachy tones in the walls and floor, and a nicer vanity.

i would change the floor and update the tiles to a more natural looking texture like the stone tiles or something of the like. (make sure you wont slip when its wet) then instead of replacing the wallpaper, i would do a really nice natural looking tile around all the walls- or at least those around the tub. and paint the other walls an earthy neutral color. then decorate with leaves and bamboo plants even a picture in a color that compliments but really pops!

I kind-of like the green. I think the worst things are the sink counter and the medicine cabinet. Taking down the wallpaper and painting is a nice easy DIY project. Then I'd probably want a tile floor.

I wish people would take straight pictures when they ask for help. That is really annoying to look at! I don't have any tips. We had the avocado while I was growing up and my mom went from metallic floral with gold to country floral with antique brass. It never really bothered me, but also her bathroom has never settled, it's never been quite right since she had it renovated and tore out the fixtures and tile to replace with white. I think the green is a nice neutral color that goes with a lot of schemes. It works a lot better than the pink people usually get stuck with, although pink can be managed, it's a lot easier to get along with green. Brown, blue, white, cream, other greens. It's a very friendly color.

Depends on your budget, but start by:
1) replacing toilet seat with white one.
2) eliminating wallpaper and painting walls white
3) replace floor with white tiles or something equally basic.
4) replace vanity if possible.

That'd go a long way to make your bathroom inviting. Layer in some white fluffy towels, a bath mat and a few decor items and it'd look a whole lot better.

I actually don't mind the medicine cabinet. Could even look funky correctly styled.

I've redone a similar bathroom as well. I'd leave the toilet/tub/sink alone (I love the green!) Change the toilet seat. Change the mirror/cabinet/lighting features to something current. I'd paint everything white. If you had the money to change out the sink cabinet, that'd be great. I think a new cabinet top would be cheap to do, and it would give you storage. You can install flooring yourself (peel and press). A white floor would be great. I love white and then add great towels, accessories. White make everything look clean and fresh. The green wouldn't stand out so much. But I love it.

The green tub is not bad... but the rest, aack! I'd say get rid of the toilet, sink and that awful med cabinet. How about this one:

this mirror:

Plus a new toilet, simple floor tiles and a fresh coat of paint for that border at the top of the tub/shower.

If you have the cash and time, gut it and put in white.

If you want to leave the fixtures, I'd suggest painting the walls very neutral, a neutral shower curtain, and then accents in the form of accessories. A beautiful vase or artwork will become the new focal points.

What you don't want to do is "tie in" with the green, like they tried to do with the wallpaper border. It just looks sad.

The avacado actually looks nice now that memories of the 70s are receding. And the beige is inoffensive with it.

If I were you, I'd replace the cheap flooring and vanity/sink, then paint over the bland paint and ugly wallpaper border.

I don't think you have to do a gut reno at all.

OMG, I grew up with that floor!!

Don't let people talking you into keeping that horrible green. We all know it's bad and we'd cringe if we walked into a home we considered buying and saw that. You'd greatly increase the home value by getting a new tub, toilet and sink. I don't know anything about reglazing, so I'm not sure how that works-if it chips, looks original or painted, etc. If that's an original 70s toilet, you'd probably be better off getting a new one anyway- they always seem to run poorly when they're old.

If you have the money, I'd replace everything.

The tile looks dingy, but would probably look better with white fixtures. Otherwise replace or glaze. If you replace, some large tan tiles would be pretty and neutral. http://oldhousenewhome.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/hallbath-small.jpg Of course, plain white always works-just make sure it's white white. And maybe bring the tile higher up the wall-it looks really low to me.

Get rid of the dated medicine cabinet and put up a large framed mirror. If you want the mirror & storage of the medicine cabinet, Ikea has many options-just look under bathrooms-cabinets & shelves

Many options for the vanity top, just depends on budget. Anything from granit to quartz would look good or you can just go to Home Depot and get the premade vanities. I'd get a built-in sink, as in one that is part of the vanity. The vanity is really small and the separate sink breaks up the space big time. DON'T get one of those trendy bowls that sit on the vanity! I hate those! They take away from counterspace, which is clearly at a premium here.

Definitely get some new floors in there. We have ceramic tile in our kitchen which is nice, but slippery when wet. Not sure what else to recommend.

I'd also hang some cabinets over the toilet or get one of those shelves that stands over it.

Then go for the aqua and your set.

Keep the bathtub. Get rid of the toilet, just because I think it will be difficult to replace the white handle and wood lid to match the green. Go all white with everything (tiles, wall, sink and vanity, heating vent). White subway tiles would be nice. Or plain white tiles and a mod-patterned, textured wallpaper (if feasible) could look very luxe. White pedestal sink, simple chrome hardware. You can tie it all together with some pale green plants in bamboo boxes or textured white vases.

It depends on your budget, and how you feel about embracing the green. Personally, I'd work with it because I prefer old and solid tubs/toilets. That avocado hue definitely could veer into a Hollywood Regency decor, if you're into that kind of thing.

No matter what you do, please immediately use that hideous toilet seat as kindling!

I feel your pain. I grew up in an apartment, jr 4, with every shade of avocado grreeeen wallpaper in every room. Kitchen sink and stove also the same shade.

Get rid of as much of it as possible depending on your budget. I don't think the reglazing is a good idea. It only lasts a couple of years and then you have to do it again. If it the tub was damaged yes but otherwise dont do it just to change the color.

I would definitely replace the sink and toilet. But if that is not an option bring more neutral tones in and use the green as an accent. Get a modern vanity in a deep wenge finish and also the medicine cabinet. Take out the tile and update it with maybe a neutral porcelain tile with glass accents or a border in green and aqua tones. You can introduce more aqua with glass bottles, a small aqua ceramic vase or bathroom vanity ensemble.

Do the floors in a nice ceramic or natural stone. Good luck

Some color ideas that I think go well w/ that green are: black
plum
mix in lots of different hues of green
some blues would look nice w/ this

you could go very art deco...

Option 3: Replace everything.

However, if you happen to keep the green tub, maybe the natural spa aesthetic might match. You know...bamboo floors, natural stone tiles, teak, cork, etc.

But considering the vanity, and the toilet and everything else you want to replace - you might as well gut the whole room.

I lived in a rented place with an avocado coloured bathroom suite so even if I could have begged borrowed or stolen the money to replace it with a white one I couldn't have (if you have the money I say replace it immediately!).

What I did with mine was I painted all the walls white, I put a dark wood toilet seat on the toilet, and hung a dark wood framed mirror. I then put in burgundy coloured towels and a burgundy coloured bathmat. The burgundy and dark wood colour were similar enough and strong enough to kind of gang up against the avodaco green and keep it in it's place.

But I do say if you can afford to replace the suite don't think twice, just do it!

Wait until you have lived with bathroom for 3-6 months before making changes. Decide then which features are not worth living with and which are fun and fit your needs. I like the way you are already thinking green by planning to reglaze instead of doing a major land-fill project! If you need to do something, change the vinyl floor. An avocado/aqua pattern might be all you need for a year or two.

For what it's worth, here's my story: when I moved into my circa 1968 house, the fridge and entire bathroom suite was avacado. The stove was brown. When you opened the front door, the first thing you saw was that fridge. I painted it with white latex with a roller. It was ok until I bought a new fridge. The bathroom was another story. My roommate broke the toilet, so got a white one @ Home Depot. Then I bought a wood vanity fron Ikea, countertop & faucet from Home Depot, and a stainless steel vanity sink from a used building materials salvage place, just when stainless steel sinks & appliances were getting popular. I hired Bath Fitter to install an acrylic tub right over the old one. I didn't get the tub surround, just the tub. I wish I had done it then. The walls in the tub area had just been replaced with Barker Tile sheets that looked like white ceramic tiles. The rest of the original walls are horizontal t&g varnished wood so it looks like a sauna. I think it looks pretty good. Good Luck!

If you're stuck with the green, I agree that a "natural spa" aesthetic would be nice. Another option would be something sunny and mediterranean -- I think a pale lemony yellow (very light and sunny) might look OK with that green. At minimum, get rid of the vanity, the toilet seat, the wallpaper border, and the lino.

If you can afford to redo the entire thing, do it. That bathroom is too small for a sink, toilet, and bathtub in a shade that dark. I'm sorry you've inherited someone else's bad decorating taste. (That border!)

Yikes. That is hideous. I usually am in favor of making do, but in your case: if budget allows, gut it and get whatever you want (I would go with white for a classic look, but whatever you choose will be better than this).

If you can't do everything at once, triage:

(0. Paint and remove wallpaper border. Go white. You can get your aqua in through accessories.)
1. Replace the tragic floor. Classic white tiles (not black and white unless you are switching out the fixtures; too busy) or black granite. If you're keeping the avocado fixtures, slate would be pretty.
2. Replace the vanity. Get something in a dark finish if you are keeping the avocado.
3. New mirror, medicine cabinet, lighting. Something simple.
4. New toilet and sink. White. You can get a really nice looking pedestal sink and water-saving toilet for not much $$$ these days.
5. Replace or reglaze bathtub and tile. If budget doesn't go this far, you can always just cover your shame with a cute shower curtain.

You will regret ripping this out or reglazing. The 70s is back back back with a vengeance - and you have great stuff to get your own party started!

Replace the floor with Daltile Keystone ceramics: http://retrorenovation.com/2008/05/13/1-choice-for-retro-bathroom-flooring-3-awesome-new-choices-from-daltile/

I don't think it's bad at all - it appears to be in good condition, and lots of folks are have almond-beige and olive-green in their living rooms...

I would get rid of the vinyl flooring and install a nice medium-toned greenish-beigey-grey ceramic tile with dark grout. Swap out the laminate vanity top for a coordinating solid-surface top that has some green speckles in it with an almond-colored undermount sink, paint the vanity the same color green as the toilet and tub and swap the white plastic toilet handle for a chrome piece.

I'd paint the walls a creamy beige to coordinate w/ the tile - perhaps even a vertical stripe in the same olive color as the vanity?

Finally, a simple cream-colored nylon shower curtain - perhaps sew an olive-green band at the bottom?

for an avocado bathroom, this one's not half bad. I wouldn't do much but live with it for a while. It all looks to be in good shape, even if it's avocado, and it would just seem completely wasteful and environmentally unfriendly to rip it all out purely for aesthetics. I'd try to find a way of working with it and seeing how creative you can be without actually tearing down stuff that's in perfectly good condition. Shower curtain, towels, etc...can transform the space.

You don't mention how much you want to spend, but I'd guess since you're moving from this place that you want to keep cost to a minimum. Going from there, I think this is an easy fix:

1. Remove wallpaper and border. Paint white, some either nice and cool to compliment the green, or nice and warm, to contrast with it;
2. Replace the toilet seat and toilet handle ASAP;
3. Replace the sink and toilet fixtures with some that are retro-modern, and that match the toilet handle;
4. Replace the flooring with marmoleum. Choose a light, warm color that unifies the tile and the tub/toilet, etc.
5. Choose your shower curtain carefully...

Then stage. Good luck.

1. Replace toilet seat!

2. Remove wallpaper border.

3. Replace flooring - even just some cheap-o stick-on vinyl in a fake slate would be better...

4. Paint walls - maybe pale blue or brown?

5. Add some teal / aqua accents and you've got the first lady's inauguration outfit! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/840/slide_840_15060_large.jpghref>

if you want to do more, the vanity top could certainly go. I kind of like the medicine cabinet, but it's an easy switch if you can't stand it.

I agree with the posters above who say to keep the green. I once read there are no ugly colors just ugly color combinations. The walls, floor, and vanity are not woking with the tub, toilet and sink at all. And definately get rid of the ugh! wood toilet seat. Green and blue are hot right now.

I'd replace the toilet and sink first. Something white, more modern. Then put in another flooring option and redo the walls. But I'd probably leave the tub and that tiling alone. With a good curtain and the rest of the room redone, it would look ok, I think. It seems that if you left that for last (the hardest, and most expensive part), it might look different when everything else was done.

As for colors, I think the green would work with brown with aqua accents, maybe?

You need to start over. If you replace just one thing, it will instantly be mismatched and make everything else look even dingier. The shower tile looks fine, so yes, I would reglaze the tub. I have a reglazed tub and three years later it still looks brand new. I would also replace the drain, as I'm sure it is rusted, and the spout and dial. Get rid of the horrible linoleum and install a nice neutral ceramic tile floor. New toilet (they are inexpensive and you can learn how to install it yourself), new vanity (make sure you replace the vanity before you replace the floor). If this is your main bath, do not put in a pedestal...you need the storage. A lot of the bath can be DIY except for the tub reglazing!

If your bath and the tiles around it are in good condition, you will save a bundle by keeping them and changing everything else. New low-water flow toilet in white, new floor in hex or mosaic tiles with green and tan accent tiles in a simple pattern around the edge:

http://ideas.houseinprogress.net/archives/000868.html

Replace entire vanity with one painted glossy "Craftsman" green (to blend with but not match tub), and (if you can afford it) have countertop made in a Caesarstone that looks like terrazzo, and brings in the beige from the shower tiles:

http://www.caesarstone.com/Product.aspx?productId=1651

Use an undermount, white sink, or do something out of keeping with the rest of the room and do a vessel sink in glass in green (this one is too green):

http://stores.channeladvisor.com/moderndanish/items/item.aspx?itemid=160606

Replace all plumbing fixtures and towel bars with chrome. Replace mirror, light and medicine cabinet with a framed, surface-mount mirror over sink and a painted wood storage cabinet over the toilet. Sconce lights on either side of mirror (style depends on what direction you go in with the sink):

http://www.rejuvenation.com/fixshowW489/templates/selection.phtml

(just an example).

A retro overhead light, perhaps:

http://www.rejuvenation.com/fixshowC918/templates/selection.phtml

Paint walls and ceiling glossy white. Add plain white towels, a high quality, white cotton shower curtain, and a plain white rug if you want a rug.

reglazing won't last long (5 years seems to be the number kicked around for the epoxy coatings)... so while you have the place empty (and while you have a place to take showers elsewhere... i'm putting money on this being the only tub/shower), you might as well do it right.

The bathroom looks to be in reasonably good condition, but its a wretched combination of colours. The hardware looks very institutional, too - as if they got it from a hospital.

You could probably salvage something from the existing arrangement, but it'd be cheaper and easier to just gut it and redo it exactly according to your own personal tastes. And why compromise when a complete overhaul would take the same amount of money and effort?

Gutting the fixtures in a bathroom does not automatically imply it will go to the landfill. If you wreck everything on its way out, it would, but if you can remove things without destroying them, someone who wants them will gladly take them off your hands. I'm not sure what the call is for avocado these days as it is for pink. I think reglazing will, if it only lasts a few years, limit your options for someone else reusing the fixtures later, if you do take them out.

Having grown up with this color, it is hard to see it being as cute as pink. Pink, as I usually say, is not a life sentence to decorating retro, you can work with the color in the now with things you like. I definitely think green has more of a life as a neutral than in a retro scheme, but it is pink's less cool cousin.

I'm sorry again, if I can't look at that picture long enough to make direct suggestions. The floor was kind of horrible. The white white white vanity doesn't look right (maybe it's all the other beige), but I think you'd go right with mellow creams. If you keep the plumbing fixtures, it can totally look elegant as opposed to tacky and dated.

Like many people, I like the green of the tub, toilet, and sink.
However, it's just too much. I'd take out the green toilet and replace it with a standard white one. And for heaven's sake, forgo a decorative toilet lid! The matching wooden toilet seat and lid are just kind of tacky, although a wooden seat and lid wouldn't be as bad with a plain white toilet.

There are a lot of interesting vanities that you could replace that vanity with. Pottery Barn has some, IKEA has many, even Overstock.com has some. And of course your local plumbing supplier will have his or her own samples and ideas. Consider them all, but keep it simple. The green basin should be banished and be replaced with a simple white one that is in keeping with the style of the vanity. White with some green decorative accents wouldn't be completely unacceptable in a new basin. The medicine chest and mirror will work themselves out when you decide on a vanity.

The floor is the worst element in the room. I'd re-tile it, but keep it simple. Probably white. And I mean TILE and not another linoleum-like surface. The linoleum like surface is what makes the bathroom look so cheap.

I think I would work on finding a soft blue paint with some green tint in it. Very, very muted.

With very soft blue green painted walls, a white toilet, and a different but prettier vanity, the green tub would stand out like the unusual and attractive feature it is. I don't think it would be dated. I think it would be fresh.

Good luck!

It looks clean and usable. Why does everything have to be ripped out and started over? Of course, if you have lots of money, then go to it.

I forgot to say that whoever put up that bars-of-candy-color wallpaper strip around the top of the walls was seriously mentally ill. OK, that's harsh. It's just really a bad idea. That detail belongs in a nursery, not a bathroom. But I really think it doesn't belong anywhere. Ever. I look forward to the day of its departure.

I think the Erin shower curtain recently linked (here it is again http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p12327/index.cfm?pkey=cshower-curtains&cm_src=oldlink ) would be nice in here... and bright, clean white for everything else. Keeping it out of landfill would be a big win for everyone (so saying that, I don't have to shower in here ;) you can make your own choices!)

I sort of love it the way it is. The plastic knobs, the speckled formica, the metal edging around the sink - it's all totally authentic and in a few years people all over America will be ripping out their cookie cutter subway tiled bathrooms and uninspired granite countertops and looking for something original. How long before we start turning to avocado fixtures as a nostalgic choice? Pull down that wallpaper border by all means, but please don't throw away that medicine cabinet. That thing is an antique.

I would:
1. remove those yellow stickers
2. remove the wallpaper
3. paint the walls white
4. change the toilet seat for a white one
5. put a white bath mat
6. put white towels
7. replace the mirror with a taller one (framed or unframed), so that the bottom of the mirror touches the top of the sink border

8. add a white shower curtain

Try to replace the toilet and sink if possible. The green is kinda pretty with the tub and the tile surround - but it goes to awful with everything else.

If you have the money, do the floor in tile or at least a better quality linoleum - there are some nicer ones. You could try to match some of the others colors of tile around the tub area.

I would then do a simple white shower curtain with some silver colored rings. Paint the walls white to match. You have enough color in the bathroom - so white would probably be the best idea. Add a nice white rug and some accessories for the sink.

David: Spray the tub and toilet white. Change the fixtures to CHrome by Sheryl Wayner. Hang a cabana style shower curtain with a swag, a buttom jabot and then a hanging straight panel. Paint the floor in a nautical theme. Fabric gathered on the ceiling in a subburst with tassells and buttoms hanging down. Hang ship light fixture from center of button in middle of room. Paste plastic daisys to exterior tub. Glue Mirrors around the room to add appearance of a crown molding. Nice.

replace the flooring.. or cut a large peice of scrap carpet to cover the dimensions.

replace the toilet seat with matching top (hard to find) or at least cover the top part with a cream cover..

lots of nuetral colors! cream, tan - with small pops of color!

current green, cream, black

current green, cream, turquoise

current green, cream, tan, orange

something like that?

I have that same vanity mirror. I actually really like it.
I would rip up the linoleum and replace it with some white or cream tiles, and remove the wallpaper and paint the walls white. If they are still in good shape I would leave the tub, sink and toilet. I think they are retro cool. (Get a white toilet seat though). If you only have six weeks to get the WHOLE place ready and the rest of the condo needs as much work as you say I wouldn't replace all the fixtures in this room until the rest of the place is more livable.

Whatever you do, don't reglaze. I've heard horror stories of peeling coating, and unless you get an ultra professional to do it, it can come out looking really tatty. And the coating won't last that long. Besides, the tub, sink, and toilet are gorgeous!

The floor definitely needs to be replaced, and I'd recommend a 60's look to go with the avocado (I'm just not a big fan of the 70's.) And avocado was definitely a color used in 60's design. Check out RetroRenovation.com for ideas.

I'm always entertained with how detailed people get with their instructions. "#1 - Remove the yellow stickers!"

I say definitely keep the green and throw your money into new flooring. After that, just change out the toilet and sink hardware and find a graphic print wallpaper that complements the green.

Real Simple had an article in the last year "Can These Bathrooms Be Saved?" that had a great example of pairing a printed wallpaper with teal tile.

good luck.

Sure you have enough comments, but one more! Avocado is TOTALLY in style again. I think you should go with it (unless you have enough $$ for a total redo). Look online for inspiration of modern color combinations using avocado green. For instance: http://jansdotter.com/shop/item.php?serial=70021
http://www.orlakiely.com/usa/
Pick your favorite and go with it. Robins egg blue with silver accents are very hot with the avocado right now. I would suggest a moderate redo where you replace the floor (i am thinking mosaic tiles), keep the white ceramic tiles at the tub, remove wall paper and paint according to the scheme you chose, update fixtures according to scheme you choose (i would go stainless/chrome, to match the sink rim and medicine cabinet). The sink will be instantly dressed up with the new faucet, same with the tub. Same with the toilet, metal handle and seat will make it feel more intentional. Match the towel/toilet holders and things will instantly pull together. If you can add lighting, that would be great too. Keep the medicine cabinet. Not sure what to say on the vanity. . . if you can do the same mosaic tile as on the floor and replace the laminate, that would be great. I just think replacing the sink but keeping the tub is not the best solution. Either keep all the avocado or get rid of it all. Most of all, best of luck and have fun!

I totally don't hate the Avocado green either! But, as someone with the "pink" cousin in their bathroom, I can sympathize with your frustrations!

This is what I would do!

Keep the avocado tub - it appears to be clean, in good condition, and it can definitely be a "statement" piece in the bathroom. Just swap out the drain and shower hardware with a shiny chrome, and it will look great.

I would swap out the toilet and sink for something in the bone family. I love the idea of a very retro avocado green bathroom, I just think if you're going to replace the toilet and sink, it's going to be very difficult to match that same shade of green. I've had that issue in my pink bathroom - they just don't make that same pink anymore, so any repair work I've done has been in bone, because it looks better than a mismatched pink!

It's a personal thing, I just don't love white bathrooms...I think bone is a softer color, and will make the avocado easier to work with. I was in Home Depot over the weekend, and you can get a pre-fab vanity/counter top that is relatively inexpensive, looks good, and then put in a bone drop-in sink easily. Definitely get a vanity that has storage space underneath...no floating furniture!

Add a more contemporary faucet and drain, and the bathroom will look great! A new toilet is also relatively inexpensive. I think it would definitely be wise to have the toilet/sink match that way leaving the retro tub looks purposeful, not "we were too lazy to go all the way".

If you can finish tiling the wall, I would raise the tile a little higher in the shower. If you can replace the tile, I'd go with a more current looking stone tile...but if you can't, I don't think it's the end of the world! Like I said...I have the same glossy tile...in pepto-bismol pink!

I would definitely rip down the border of wallpaper, and paint a putty brown color...I think the Benjamin Moore Historical colors have some of the best beiges/bones/browns. It'll create a nice contrast against the tub (and potential new toilet and sink). and be softer and richer than the fleshy color currently on the walls. I also think deep aqua towels, accessories, glass, etc. will look beautiful against it. And repaint the ceiling a bright white.

I also think wallpapering the entire bathroom isn't the worst idea either - depending on the paper you use...you can get something incredibly unique and really make a statement...but I think wallpaper is a personal preference...but a good pattern on the paper is a very easy way to get the aqua in...I just think paint is easier!

If you can, do a new lighting fixture above the medicine cabinet, but I actually like the medicine cabinet! I wouldn't replace it.

The floor - I'd do a beige/bone/brown stone tile floor. Nothing too expensive, but something that looks expensive! And do a beige tub mat (not aqua!).

I'm not a fan of West Elm style, but something in the retro color says "go for it". (You're lucky it's a hot color -- my parents' house has bright pink!)

1. Keep the tub. Update the fixtures to premium quality (well worth the money, BTW). Add glass doors.
2. Paint the floor with a gloss brown-green epoxy slightly darker than the tub, or replace with ebonized bamboo flooring.
3. Tile tub to ceiling with small (glass?) mosaic white tiles. Bonus points for texture, overall or in bands. Extra points for continuing tile around other walls as a wainscot.
4. Replace vanity top with dark butcher-block style top. Keep the bowl, but update the fixtures a la tub fixtures.
5. Replace toilet with more efficient model. Old toilets are rarely worth the trouble.
6. Lose the mirrors and overhead lighting. Side sconces are much more flattering.

Have fun!

Replace the vanity and tear down the wallpaper. Paint the walls a pale yellow. That would be a good start if you can't afford to do everything at once.

I can't say I have a suggestion to solve your problem, but I can tell you is that I feel your pain!

My parents are still living with that horrible green. It once consumed the entire kitchen (the tile floor, the wall paper, the counter tops, the sink, the appliances...oh god it was awful) - they've managed to beat it back...its only the counter tops and the sinks now but my god, just seeing that bathroom is giving me awful avocado flashbacks :P

Save the green! Disco it up a little in there. Have some fun! Replace the wallpaper with something 70's-inspired and glam. Redo the floor (so many great options!), get a mirrored waste basket, funky70's lighting fixture...IOW go tastefully wild. It'll be everyone's favorite room.

Moss green and aqua absolutely DO go together!

Keep all the green fixtures

Lose or modify the vanity. the green sink is cool--is there a way to use it--say build a stainless steel cabinet or pedestal for it???? And of course, lose the toilet seat!

Then I would put up some absolutely WILD 60's mod wallpaper that has turquoise and olive green tones!
