Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Glass Shade Replacement?

7-30-dahlush.jpg

Hello AT,

It's too sad, but I broke one of these glass globes. I've tried ebay, craiglist, google. DK Vogue, replacments, gomod board etc. I may just be dumb out of luck, but on the off chance that someone here may know... I submit for your advice on where it might be possible to locate a replacement globe, or 3 new ones...

And if all else fails, any suggestions as to what to do with a broken ceiling fixture???

Many thanks in advance, Dahlush

Dear Dahlush,

This is a tough one. Anyone who has a great idea, we'll blog it tomorrow because we've seen too many vintage lighting fixtures go to waste with broken shades.

You might consider removing the one that is broken and only hanging the two, OR you could consider looking for a glass shade that works and which you can get three of. Then swap all three out.

Anyone else??

I don't know where you can get replacement shades to make this new again but to the "what to do with a broken ceiling fixture" part: I recently broke the base of a table lamp (Ikea) with a glass shade and simply installed the shade on a broken ceiling fixture - voila, two broken = one whole. So, break some more stuff and I'm sure it will come to you :-)

I just went to the last day of the design triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt yesterday and they showed a lovely lighting fixture made out of Voss water bottles combined with Ikea sockets. You could similarly try looking for some type of bottle that you could somehow connect to the fixture? Good luck!

Head down to Canal Street, turn onto Bowery and start walking the street of lighting. There are fifty bajillion shops with lights and fixtures. I'm pretty sure I saw shades similar to yours when I was down there a couple of weeks ago.

(Don't miss the stores which hold nothing but crystal chandeliers, which are staggering. Not what you are looking for, but mind-blowing and worth a gander.)

I would definitely hold off on the silly "Juliejulie" suggestion until you've looked into some of the great comments/resources appearing above.

I had a fixture very much like yours, and I too broke a shade. I thought it was finished, but I went stalking through thrift stores and found a smiliar fixture with hideous wiring and 3 good shades for 5 bucks. I would suggest going to a few re sale shops and thrift stores and looking around. Good luck

I believe it's Rejuvenation Hardware in Portland, Oregon you want to investigate:

You will probably have to order all three shades in order to have a perfect match. I would take the effort to replace the shades; I have pretty much have the same fixture, which I found in a store specializing in Danish Modern, hanging in my MCM house.

Don't forget ebay, particularly if you know the manufacturer. Are there any labels hidden away on the fixture to tell you who made it? Looks like something Moe Light would have done.

Take out an ad in your local newspaper? While I do not think that is the most likely route to take (there are some good suggestions above), I was thinking that my grandparents had/have a lot of Mid C Mod stuff and they don't do craigslist, but do read the classifieds. Perhaps you might get lucky there.

I second going to the lighting stores on Bowery--they ordered a new shade for me.
