Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Large Floor Mirror?

7.6mirror.jpgHello AT,

I have been looking everywhere for a Large Floor mirror. I would like something that is around 51X90 inches... a biggy!

Crate and Barrel has one, but the wood frame is too plain. It would be great to find one that has a bit more 'character'.

Any suggestions on where I should look?

Thanks! Andrea

I would just have one made at a frame shop.

You can get the exact kind of frame that you want, and it shouldn't cost that much to add mirror to it, instead of glass.

Every frame shop on the Upper East Side has these and usually a couple of them on sale. If you're looking for a wood frame, Bombay company is currently having a sale. I believe the store on 87th and Third has had one (priced at $199 maybe?) in the window for some time.

Horchow hase some VERY ornate ones, go to their website and search "floor mirror"

Or the idea of having one made at a frame shop is good, it might be cheaper...

I know Room and Board will make several of their mirrors in whatever size you like but I'm not sure what their maximum sizes are.

If you are down with vintagey stuff and are in NYC, I'd suggest checking out Junk in Williamsburg (on Driggs & 9th). They have lots of mirrors there. You'll have to go through the piles, but you may find a gem for cheap.

I had mine made at a framing store. Its 7 feet by 5 1/2 feet. It is not the cheapest way to go, but it is a solution if you need something very specific that you can't find elsewhere. The mass produced large floor mirrors can be $500 or less if purchased at a Crate and Barrel or Z Galerie but a custom mirror of the same size will probably run you another $1000 depending on the frame. One money saving note: you may be able to buy the mirror portion from a glass supplier and have it delivered to the framer and save yourself the frame store's markup (substantial) on the glass portion of the project. Also, there are different grades and thicknesses of mirror - you want to make sure yours is appropriate for a large scale mirror - thinner mirrors will crack easily.

I'm a fan of the old huge $99 Ikea Hovet mirror. No longer available at Ikea but they turn up regularly on CL for about $50. It is super minimal though with just a thin aluminum frame. Still quite a bargain.

You might want to check out the flea market every sunday on Columbus between 77th and 78th. There's a couple of guys there that make different size mirrors, including large ones (roughly equal to the dimensions you are looking for). I believe that the frames of the mirrors consist of ceiling tiles they salvage from old buildings. The mirrors have lots of character and you can get a large mirror (7 feet by 4 feet) for less than $1,000.

The Four Seasons in Washington DC or Arlington, VA (don't remember) were remodeling and held a sale of all their old room stuff. I picked up 5 6 1/2ft mirrors. They are each heavy as all get out but they are already framed and gently used. They were $15 each. You might want to check to see if any upscale hotels in your area are doing remodeling.

Related question, how do you secure a floor mirror to prevent it from slipping without screwing it to the wall ?
