Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Simple, Modern Fireplace Screen?

2004_7_question mark.jpgDear AT,
Do you know of any place I can find a simple, modern design fireplace screen? I have a small working fireplace... roughly 27" wide by 26" high... Everything in the catalogs is either a folding screen or it's too large or too expensive... a sexy glass free-standing screen online was $750. Tried the UWS flea market over the weekend... nothing.
Thanks, Paul

We WISH we had a fireplace. Modern fireplace screens are much harder to find than traditional ones. We found This one, and this one, and this one, but really should go do something else at this point. Anyone else? MGR

Our landlord had a very simple fireplace screen made in Mexico, and I imagine you could find an iron workshop locally to do the same for not much money. It's just black mesh screen with an iron frame mirroring (but slightly bigger than) the opening of the fireplace. It stands on two legs (same iron as frame) attached perpendicular to the bottom of the frame. Ours looks especially nice because the fireplace opening has rounded corners that the screen mimics. But I think a square one would look good too.

The Chiasso catalog has a simple smaller-scale glass/steel frame similar to ones you've probably found in the $750 range (can't remember the price, but it is definitely lower), but I could not find it on chiasso.com... You can see a piece of it in the picture for the Seamo Fireplace Tools Set:
http://www.chiasso.com/productshowdetails.asp?Designer=0&PriceRange=0&Keyword=&Keywords=&Department=Home%2520Accessories&Category=misc&Interests=&Occasion=&lstManufacturers=0&BrowseID=&AgeRange=&search=0&specialorder=1&Vendor_Name=&outlet_center=&ReturnPage=6&StartPage=48&redirectTarget=&saleItemsOnly=&NewItemsOnly=

or call them at (877) CHIASSO (877.244.2776) if you don't get the catalog.

And try:

But your right, width is the biggest issue...

Hey thanks for the suggestions... The one I originally saw and love is on the page patrick had me go look at... but $700 is a little steep...

It's starting to cool down out there so I'm going to have to come up with something fast.

Thanks!

Paul: Definitely try Chiasso, as it is the closest thing I've found to the glass screen via FineLiving. Which has now gone up to $750, btw, but is offered on UnicaHome for closer to $1000...!

Just saw a Plow and Hearth catalog that had some for reasonable prices ($80-$350) which are fairly plain. Check out the web site at http://www.plowhearth.com under Hearth and Home.

Chiasso has a nice tempered glass frameless fireplace screen with stainless stand.

I found that fireplacescreens.com had a huge selection but only a few in a lower price catagory (lots of hoaky traditional designs too). I ordered the three panel for about $70 thinking that it is in a stainless finish but the picture and description are misleading and it came in black so, beware.

I liked Bellacor's selection. I ran across this on crateandbarrel.com -- http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1435&f=10626&q=fireplace&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1

It's called a Praire Grass Candle screen, but the description suggests it can be hung on a wall, placed in front of a fireplace, etc.
