Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Small, Reasonably Priced Leather Chair?

10.11chair.jpgHello AT,

Does anyone know where I can find a small scale modern leather chair that won't break the bank? I love the DWR theatre chair, but it's out of my price range. Also, making my hunt even more difficult: the door to my east village apt is only 28" wide. My current couch is a cream/light yellow, tufted leather with chrome legs. I was thinking chocolate leather, but suggestions are welcome.

Thanks! Rita

Ikea

Rita, take a look at the Klappsta chair from IKEA. It has a very similar look to the chair pictured above, for $249. It's not the comfiest chair on earth, but it's also not the worst. The leather feels substantial, and the legs are shiny chrome (not that awful dusted silver on a lot of IKEA legs).

IKEA doesn't list the dimensions on their site, but I am fairly certain it will fit through your door.

No chrome, but this chair from West Elm is nice and the perfect width.

Oh! I forgot: also from IKEA is the Arild, which does come in a chocolate brown. Again, the legs are shiny, and the Arild is much more comfortable than the Klappsta (and double the price). It's a 1/4" wider than your doorway, but I'm sure you can get it in sideways/legs first.

Often, homedecoratorsoutlet.com carries small leather chairs. I haven't ordered from them, but a colleague has with no complaints.

west elm has a bigger but modern shaped leather chair on their home page these days, i think it goes for 1,000.
crate and barrel has some very small scaled and clean shaped leather chairs that will be more expensive but certainly less than DWR.

I am not quite sure what the budget is, but here is a chair with grade 1 leather for about $500 less with a similar look (Going with fabric could save you an additional $500...):

If the measurements are correct, you should have no trouble getting it through the door. This collection also comes in a variety of sofa configurations:

I'd also look into seeing how professional movers/delivery people wrangle furniture through narrow doorways. I have one myself, and obsessed every night after I ordered my beautiful new sofa, that I'd be sitting on it out in the hallway. However, the delivery guys turned it just right, and it came in without a hitch.

Try going to www.overstock.com and search "leather chair". There are a ton of selections and I think the most expensive option is $479.00. Plus, any order ships for $2.95. I've ordered from them and was pleased. Sometimes you have to search through some pretty awful options and search often because their stock changes, but you could find something suitable.

hi rita,
since you're in NYC, you could try making a trip out to the dwr annex in secaucus (or just give them a call). depending on your budget, you might get lucky... i found a theatre sofa there at a substantial discount. i recall there were several theatre chairs too.
good luck!

If you can get out to their outlet store in Secaucus maybe you can find it for a lot less. I got the Bantam sofa there for $450 (I think, maybe it was $500). That was with an additional discount because they were starting a sale in a few days and took the extra off too. My sister got one of their leather sofas the same day for less than a third of what it sells for at their regular store. They don't have all their products there of course.

I'd also try Pier 1, Chiasso, and Eurway.

Also consider a leather dining chair with arms.

I'm in a similar fix--mostly because my room setup is too tight for a chair larger than 28", yet I want it to be super comfy! I'm considering hacking the Klappsta (The arlid is way too wide) with new seat cushion foam and a down back cushion a la

You can buy IKEA chairs *without* covers, so I'm considering bringing the cover to an upholsterer and having it copied in Paul Smith wool, then returning it:

Then I would have the chair of my dreams for very little! ALthough--that might be completely crazy.....

I got a similar leather club chair at the Atlantic Avenue Target in Brooklyn for $149 (on sale). It doesn't have any chrome, but it looks great and the price was right! Totally doesn't look like something from Target.
Also, since you're in NYC I saw something very similar at an antique store in Williamsburg just last weekend. Don't remember how much it cost though, sorry. The store was on Wythe off of Grand St. There are a few nice antique furniture places over there (although they tend to be a bit pricey. Still worth a look though.)
