Good Questions: Where Can I Find a White Sofa?

12-4-sofa.jpgHello AT, Where, oh where, do I find a smallish white sofa that isn't offwhite, or leather, or twill, or shaped like a spaceship... the cure made me realize that i need to divest myself of 2/3rds of my belongings AND i need to redo my living room... i love Old Hollywood, circa 20's and 30's, lots of mirrors and glass...

and i'm looking for a white sofa that's graceful and feminine, but comfy (and WHITE)... tufting or fringe would be nice - but maybe a bit crazy with two Persian cats in da house... suggestions?

Thanks! Elaine

Elaine:

The December issue of Elle Decor has a great round up of ten loveseats chosen by interior designers Barclay Butera and Laura Kirar. The article shows ten designs in white. While some may be expensive ($6,800), others are reasonable ($2,090) and all measurements and contact info is given for each design. We would recommend this as a great place to start! A lot of the manufacturers were new to us, and browsing their sites we found LOTS of interesting pieces—good luck! —aaron

I absolutely love the white Petrie Sofa @ Crate&Barrel...sadly it wouldn't fit in my apt. It's the one made famous in the movie The Breakup.

The Bogart line from Thomasville has a cool art deco-ish but not space-shipish white sofa. That said, most furniture places have a large assortment of upholstery available to custome cover your piece.

Rachel Ashwell Collection - The creator of "Shabby Chic" books, bed linens, pillows, furniture and much more. They furniture is pricey but well made.
You can also go to Pottery Barn check out the PB Basic in white denim. They have a loveseat or small sofa. These are slipcovered which can be removed and machine washed depending on the fabric you chooose.

YOu should check out Mitchell Gold (www.mitchellgold.com). Though I dislike the practice of giving furniture collections names suited for suburban children, it's quality stuff. I think the Stephon, Ava, and Margot sofas would work weel with the 20s and 30s aesthetic, and maybe the Odette Sofette, too.

At Ethan Allen you can choose every aspect -- arm, skirt, pillows, etc. and the fabric. It is the one place to get custom upholstered furniture that is good qaulity and not outrageously expensive.

I love my crate and barrel sofa - They have tons of upholstery options and if you got it in basic white cotton I think either the Grace ( which is what I have ) or the camden would look really great and simple -then add some beautiful decorative silk pillows!

What about Sotheby by lazyboy? You can get it in multiple fabrics. http://www.la-z-boy.com/ourfurniture/product.aspx?pid=3374 Their Lexi chair also might work -- armless, but very sleek looking and wider than a traditional chair.

Room and Board offers a white ultrasuede, twills, etc. on many of their upholstered products, including their "small scale" sofas, and their whites are always an option if you go "custom." I like the ultrasuede in particular for a fabric as light as white (forgiving and easy to clean)...

Check out the Flanagan, Flynn and Thompson in particular (link in my name) for at least a little of a va-voom curve on the backs (even if not all of the tufting, etc.) you might be going for. With great pillows or throws to glam it up, on of those may well do the trick... Those range from $900-1300 with in-stock fabric.

Good luck!

Potomac twin sleeper sofa at crate and barrel rocks. My friend has it in her apt and i can attest its comfy for sitting, falling asleep on the sofa and sleeping on the fold out!!

It also looks a lot like the white love seat posted in the question....

Don't forget the option of having your loveseat built for you. I can't make a NY recommendation, but in San Francisco, going custom (with down cushions, properly aged frame, and whatever else is supposed to be on the sofa-quality list) didn't cost any more than buying a mass-produced sofa. You just go to a company that builds sofas, choose your arm, back, and fabric options -- and six weeks later, you have a sofa that's exactly what you want!

Consider white slipcovers instead. Washable slipcovers.

In DC we have a lovely store called Random Harvest (there are three of them in the area, but no where else in the country). The owner redoes art 20s and 30s furniture, mainly bought at auction - you get to pick the fabric. Because they are original, almost everything is love seat sized.
As NYC puts our shopping in DC to shame, I am sure you can find a similar place in the city. But if you are ever in DC and love old hollywood, you have to stop by this place. And they deliver. www.randomharvest.com

Thomasville has a lot of great options, and they have a new line that has a skirt on the bottom similar to the picture above. Their pricing is competitive and the quality is great, and the fact it is custom and their fabric choices are pretty good. As a designer, I find myself using them quite often; you can't beat them on upholstered goods!

love that sofa! my home is predominantly white - and SLIPCOVERS are the way to go. i wash mine maybe twice a year - and put them back on when they're still damp - they stretch a little when wet (like jeans) and dont get wrinkled up.

i will always love white b/c its soooooo versatile and b/c i'm a gemini and we have commitment issues

I have put off buying my living room furniture for almost 5 years now because I cannot find what I'm looking for. About 5 years ago I went online to find the perfect sofa and withing a few searches I found it at furniturefind.com so I sent a request for fabric samples needless to say once I got them not only did they no longer sell the item but the representative no longer worked there. It was called the Liberace & Juiet collection. I don't know who the manufacutere is and I have searched & searched still with no luck. I hope you can help.

Thanks
