Good Questions: Where Can I Find Cool Doors?

8-8-door.jpgHello AT,

I am writing an email with a picture attached so that perhaps you can or anyone can help me find a store that sells cool interior doors such as the one attached?

Thanks! May

"Interiors" magazine is a great resource for items like this, but you may have to look through a lot of issues.

May, you can try Neoporte, but be prepared to drop some bank. http://www.neoporte.com/designs.html (these are mostly used for exterior purposes, though.)

Also, there was a link a while back on AT:Chicago about the Air Door. check it out--it might be what you're after:

That door in the picture is gorgeous but you'll have to invest in a whole lot of q-tips to clean dust out of all those tiny squares.

May, another source for you... World of Doors

There are some insanely well crafted and beautiful doors here:

They are fairly expensive though. Note- they also have super nice apartment entry doors with fancy locks.

I should add, by the way, that if you're in NYC they have a nice showroom at the D&D Building that you can check out.

While we're on the subject, and keeping in with last month's theme, anyone know where I can get an interior dutch door? My searches have been coming up with zippo. I need one to keep the dogs out of my workroom while still having the cross ventilation and would prefer a dutch door to a transom.

World of Doors website is just terrible. Every time I try to get an enlarged image of their doors, I get a big window that says "NO" in it. Okay, I won't, I won't!

Cool looking doors, though.

Mardi, if you can't find the door you want, try a child gate. Easy to set up, different finishes & designs. We used one for years to keep our dogs out of the kitchen; had the benefit that you didn't need hands to operate it (but dogs couldn't open it). If you google hands free child gate you should find lots.

one related question-- what about sliding doors (bi-fold) with tracks for a small closet? does anyone have suggestions on this front?

TruStile Doors has a large selection and offer bifolds and dutch doors.

I like this one:

The Trepiu doors are elegant and simple, but run about $1600 for a standard height, 24-inch door. Trustile has lots of options, and I bought two of them through Prince Lumber on 15th St., but they aren't solid wood, they dent easily, and they aren't cheap either.

(Just bought 8 doors from a variety of sources. Not Trepiu, alas.)

S, maybe submit the bifold question as a good question? I would love to know, too, since I think we are going to have to resort to them when we redo our closet. Maybe not, but if there's a better option, it would be nice to know!

Felicity: when you siad they aren't solid wood, do you mean that they are hollowcore or that they are not carved wood but rather pieced together? What type of wood are they?

Colleen: TruStile doors are solid MDF (they do wood too). I don't think they dent easily at all. Mine have a nice heft and do a good job keeping sound out my room. They're definetly nothing like hollowcore doors.

One of my favorites is the door in my link. It's shown as a double door but you can order just one if you like.
