Dear AT,
...Another problem is curtains. I would like to hang curtains from the ceiling to the floor to section off the bedroom. Are there any good places that sell 10'w x 12'h curtain panels? Also, I used to use blackout curtains in my bedroom but their length limit is 80". My windows are now 103", anyone know where I can find blackout curtains to fit? Or just the fabric so I could build them myself?
Help!
Sara
For good, cheap long curtains Ikea has the best selection. For some strange reason, those Swedes make many of their curtains standard at 118". For fabric we go to Joe's Fabric Warehouse on Delancey and just got this great tip for Mood Designer Fabric on west 37th st., where they have tons of closeouts on current designer fabrics. Anyone else? (Thanks, Sara!) MGR

smithandnoble.com offers custom draperies/fabric panels in a variety of top treatments, up to 144" in length. You can pre-order swatches, too, from their over 200 fabric choices.
High ceilings and big beautiful windows are standard in Stockholm's old apartments.
HARRY ZARIN - 318 Grand Street - 212-925-6112 is a good place for fabric - and their website's pretty good: www.harryzarin.com
ALSO - ROSEN & CHADICK is pretty key, also - 240 West 40th Street - 212-869-0182
I've ended up ordering roll up blackout shades from Home Depot. I started at Lowe's but their curtains only go to 96" in length, HD's vendor goes to 144". I'll get them in about 2 weeks, so we'll see what happens.
And Lowe's just sucks: I called them about this and they called their vendor apparently, calling me back to say yes they could do it, just come in and order it. When I went in, the guy had not even paid attention to the crutial part of my question and it turned out they couldn't do it after all. That's real great customer service.
Knowing Ikea's penchant for adapting products TO manufacturing techniques-- instead of the other way around-- I'd guess the standard Ikea lengths have more to do with looms or something like that than with an historical Swedish context. But "none's" theory is definitely sexier!
Go to Zarin Fabric Warehouse or website zarinfabrics.com. Call store if not on site. Best quality and price around. Bed Bath is cheap but you get what you pay for right? if you go to store..they might have closeouts too. Free Parking. Good luck!
Try www.idreamofdrapery.com. You can choose fabrics (have a free sample sent), style and length. Add blackout lining or interlining as well. Best of luck.
