Good Questions: Where Can I Find These Chairs?

4-17-diningroomset.jpgHello AT,

Where can I find this dining room set I saw in the NYTimes? The chairs are leather but "slung" on the metal frame. I love it, but there's no clue as to where it's from, and I've never seen it before.

Thanks, Reshma

Dear Reshma,

We found it HERE!

William Katavolos and friend Douglas Kelly, created the T-chair model number 3LC, This elegant three-legged piece became widely acclaimed and loved by many critics. designed by Katavolos-Littell-Kelley and produced by Laverne Inc. It is made of Chrome plated tubular steel with an enameled steel frame, with leather sling seat.

Artnet.com

It seems that the chairs are no long in production but are often sold. We would check eBay, Craigslist, 1stDibs and generally scour the internet with key words.

Anyone else?

These are commonly known as the Laverne chair. My mom still has a dozen of them in brown leather. Fabulsous looking, but not very comfortable. Plus, they tend to tip over when you're sitting on them (!). I saw some just recently, in white, for sale at the Modern Show at the Armory in NYC. I forget the exact price, but somewhere in the range of $2000 each, I think.

Yes, manufactured by Laverne International. They are no longer in production, and were quite famous in the 60s along with bertoïa wire and saarinen tulips, especially the version where the seat is made out of some transparent vinyl. They didn't quite make it to the posterity as other famous iconic pieces. They ran for something like $450 a piece at that time, so they were a luxury piece of furniture. As always, ebay is your best bet.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, chair tipping over might be a problem, but I still love the way they look. Does anyone know where the table in the photo is from?

Re: chairs - any idea where there's one in NYC? I'd like to check them out 'in person' before beginning my internet hunt.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I have four of these chairs, and unfortunately two suffer from the common problem of the leather slings splitting. Does anyone have any tips about getting the leather replaced?

Thanks--
Sam, Fort Worth
