Good Questions: Where Can I Find this Couch?

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

2005_8_8_notreallyit.jpgHello AT,

Where does the couch come from in the movie "Closer"? Yes, I mean the one which Anna (Julia Roberts) points to when confessing her indiscretions to Dr. Larry (Clive Owen). It's brown, leather and oh so yummy. The movie on the other hand was plech.

The closest I can find is this from Restoration Hardware (Picture above). But the couch in the movie is MUCH bigger and MUCH cooler. Perhaps someone out there is in the know.

Generally, how does one discover the make/brand of something seen on a movie set? Ah, the pretty talentless people and their pretty things.

Lauren

Dear Lauren, Unfortunately, we don't get out to the movies very often, but we know some readers do... Can anyone help Lauren today?

(on the question of finding out what is used in movies, this is not easy. Stylists are typically hired to fill out the sets of films and they usually work freelance and have all their own favorite sources. They will also typically rent nice items from stores and use cool vintage or interesting pieces when they can find them. The couch you saw might have been a vintage find in a store in LA or NYC, etc... If you can find out the city where it was filmed, you may get close... This couch is or was probably for sale in that place. Asking here is the best bet we know of) MGR

On IMDB they have auctions for items used in movie sets, it might be there, or at least you could get a source...

I have no assistance, but I have been eyeing that sofa from RH for quite a while (someday when I live in a palace). Lauren, how can you get much bigger than 94 W x 47 D. That is close to 4 feet deep! I could almost lay down flat, and not the way you normally do on a sofa ;) Good luck on your search!

Try George Smith company in Soho.
I know this is vague, but... a British company known for its large, deep sofas was profiled by the NY Times... oh I cannot remember, probably at least 2 years ago. The sofas are VERY high-end and the standard color is pink. Anyone with really good lexis-nexis skills out there?

Try American Leather

aha! the British company I was thinking of is George Sherlock. seats are 40 inches deep -- is that big enough?

Me, LOL, I think of that same pink over stuffed couch that the NYTimes profiled often. I really want one like that someday. I think the article called it "pepto" pink. Would be great to re-read that article. You're right -- I too think it was from the UK, down stuffed.

Hello Lauren, looks like you have good taste in all things British.

My sofa is 105 inches long and 50 inches deep!

I had it made at Sofa Workshop in the UK, which will do any fabric, or leather. (Mine breaks into two chair-sized halves for moving.)

Check out Expressions custom furniture in the US... but I'm not sure if they do leather.

West Elm has one that is similar--but does not have all the nice finishing the one you posted has.

The Retrospect Collection at Room & Board may get you closer to the traditional feel.

Try the Garret sofa...

The exact sofa that is in the movie Closer can be found at Natrona Furniture. We were curious too and did some research and found the manufacturer. Hope this helps. We are located at 145 W 20th St. 212 404 7649. -Natrona Furniture
