Hello AT,
I love this exterior door on Miles Redd's home featured on NYSD house (scroll down, I am not sure how to link directly to picture). Regardless, I covet, covet this door. Under what search terms would I find this kind of knob? Usually I am a pretty good researcher. But I am at a loss. I believe I could recreate this door, alas... but for the knob & plate. Anyone know a source? Please?
Thanks, Laurie W

By "knob" do you mean the thing in the centre of the door that looks (to me) like an old fashioned doorbell (you have to turn these like a key to make it ring)?
I would also try H. Theophile
I always dreamed of having one of those big center-door knobs too after watching lots of old movies ... they always remind me of some swanky art-deco New York penthouse door. Can't say I've ever seen them on an outside building door, though! Looks cool!
Those middle-of-the-door doorknobs are common throughout Europe, on old buildings. Maybe try a European supplier?
It's not a doorknob; it's correctly termed a pull knob or door knob pull, ie it doesn't turn in any direction. It's stationary element and useful for pulling the door shut and nothing else. (Though it looks wonderful.) The typical gist is this, as per my own experience living abroad with similar door furniture (correct term): Turn the key in the lock as you pull the pull toward you, which helps the bolt release more easily ... voila, access! On the inside of the door is a latch, typically, which acts to open and lock the door from the inside. Check them out at worldofbrass.co.uk, a British door furniture site. They cost around 18 pounds (about $30).
Looks like this might come close:
http://www.nanz.com/a_catalogue/products/knobs/item.lasso?Cat=Knobs-Over-Sized%20Knobs&searchitem=&suites=&skip=6
It comes in a 4 1/2 inch diameter "for use as a decorative knob often used at the center of an entry door"
Miles Redd says that all of his door hardware comes from the incredibly beautiful, insanely expensive Soho shop E.R. Butler.
FYI according to a call I once placed to Nanz, Nanz bases its prices on quantity ordered and type of finish desired ... you have to fax this information over before any price will be given ...
A quick look at E.R. Butler's website ... it looks like Redd's center door pull and matching rose (ie mounting plate) is part of the Traditional RB series from the W.C. Vaughan Collection, in a custom nickel finish.
i quite like Miles' house. Love the use of the color red....

readingglasses thanks for the link info. Wonderful stuff. I love these type of merchants, Very old school, extremely high quality in materials and craftsmanship and I'm sure they have prices that are not for the faint of heart.
If you look at the inside of the door in the article it has a lever pull under the lock on the inside.
A friend of mine with a one-bedroom in manhattan got a price quote from Butler for his interior door hardware--$12,000! It's jewelry for your home.
This type of door seems like it would be a real pain to close in a hurry - or worse, in an emergency. I love making my home unique and aesthetically interesting, but I wouldn't go near this.
2 stores in NYC that might have...
GRACIOUS HOME - Third and 77th
SIMON'S - Third and 28 ??
They both have websites for exact addresses.
Check them out and then go on websites for less expensive pricing.
I love the color of the door, that transom window, gorgeous columns, and that massive door knocker. God, that thing would wake the neighbors...over in Brooklyn!
All I can think of reading that headline is "Edina."
Hi there -
I live in England and these types of "knobs" are on loads of houses in the village where I live and in London. What is necessary to accompany this type of knob is a type of door lock everyone has over here on their doors called a "Yale" lock. (You can see there is a Yale lock on the left on this door in the photo as well.) When you turn the key in the lock, that actually releases the door to let you in. Not the door handle. That handle/knob doesn't actually turn.
This type of door furniture can easily be found over here in England and I would even look on eBay.co.uk or Google.co.uk and have something sent over to you in the States. I wish I could recommend a good site over here. I can't remember where we got our new knob that is similar to that when we put new door furniture on our door before selling our house. Good luck!
that is an E.R. Butler knob. www.erbutler.com. so is the door knocker.
