Good Questions: Where Can I Look for Non-Trad Wallpaper?

2005_9_23_hannah2.jpgHello AT,

I've been inspired by entries in the "I've got color" contest to add some texture to my hallway. I am thinking about adding wallpaper.

Any ideas on where I might start looking for non-traditional patterned paper? I am considering an argyle pattern right now. Perhaps there is a way to develop your own custom patterned paper?

Thanks, D.

Ooh, ooh! Farrow & Ball has great hand block-printed and striped papers. My favorite is a bird print...which I can't seem to find right now = \

Flavor Paper does some papers that turn tradition on its head. Helpfully, many of their wildest patterns are also offered in a more neutral (black/beige) colorway.

Check out this site. They do big, one-image, photographic wallpaper as well as some really nice patterns, etc.

Sometimes the site's a little hard to read because it's translated (original site is Dutch).

I am almost 100% certain you can find an argyle paper from Ralph Lauren Wallpapers. I don't think the wallpapers are online, but any store that carries the furniture will have the wallpaper books to browse through.

There are still some other choices for nontraditional wallpaper as well.

These are to the trade, but I know you can buy all maharam textiles through moss. Be aware that these papers tend to run much wider than the normal double roll wallpaper.

Maharam.com has a several of the Alexander Girard Wallpapers reissued. Alphabet and Roman Stripe come to mind.

Knolltextiles.com has some very graphic wallpapers by 2X4 and papers such as a very cool textural woven wallpaper called Shuffle by Elizabeth Whelan. I think Metropolis did a story about this paper.

Also don't forget about twenty2's line of wallpaper (this is different than their wallbands). www.twenty2.net
I believe they also have a partnership with designtex for a separate set of products as well. www.dtex.com

I would also check out Flavorpaper.com too, its very metallic silkscreened. But amazing patterns. They are based in New Orleans, but they survived the storm according to their website. They are based in 9th ward, so definitely every order is going to count for them.

Ralph Lauren has an extensive line of wallpapers available. Wallaurs and Janovic plaza also have the books if you don't want to go to an RL store. The Clubhouse Classics book has an argyle type pattern which was inspired by the Chrysler Building which is deco in feeling but also very modern in its graphic-ness. The entire book was inpsired by the menswear collection.

I also really like papermills and they will do custom patterns for low minimums.

I am a wallpaper designer, I hand print a line of wallpaper and I do custom design as well. My designs are definitely non traditional, oversized and bold with strong colors. Feel free to check out my website at www.customdesignprojects.com and feel free to contact me with any questions. Two of my designs can be seen in this month's (January 2006) edition of Shelter magazine as well as last month's edition of Spaces magazine, published in the UK. I also have a profile online this month in the Design Public newsletter.

Hello everyone,
I live in a small apartment in new york city that I rent and since I can't paint the walls it would be nice if I can find wallpaper that's removable. Any suggestions or stores (online or off) would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kathy:)

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Cavern - www.cavernhome.com - I recently ordered their migration print and it's absolutely gorgeous! Couldn't be happier with it.

Recently came across these prints as well which are interesting: www.printpattern.com though not necessarily my style.

I have searched high and low for interesting wallpapers. In addition to the ones listed before, check out the following. (NOTE: some are based in the UK)

Also, someone above mentioned Eijffinger in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, they don't have a rep in the US and aren't willing to ship directly to you. (Nor will they allow any of their retailers to sell to you.) That was particularly frustrating because their selection is beautiful.
