Good Questions: Where Can I Touch This Kitchenette?

4-10--kitchen.jpgHello AT,

I like the way this 60" Acme unit looks but I have not been able to locate any place that would show me the unit physically. I have contacted all the usual stores and showrooms including (Acme, Summit, A. J. Madison, Kitchen Systems, Gringer & Sons, Bloom & Krup, plus Home Depot, Sears and other Manhattan stores and showrooms) but no one has a unit to show me. I also called the stores mentioned on your site the other day.

As it is rather an expensive and important purchase to make without being able to see it, I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions or has a 60 inch unit that I might come and look at.

Thanks, Eileen

Dear Eileen,

We spoke to Acme and they said that they have one on display at Tarallo Distributors (1455 Union Post Road, Bronx, NY 718.931.3940). It is only the 48", but it will give you an idea of their craftsmanship and quality.

We were surprised that they had no other showrooms in the area, so we asked them about that. They said they sell most of their units in upstate NY where they are located. They have been around for 60 years, however, so they should be reliable.

If anyone else has one of these in NYC they could show Eileen that would we a great help. Anyone?

You know, it looks like the unit I had in my dorm room years ago -- you might ask if anyone has installed a bunch of them lately...

Hello Eileen,

I think these kitchens are categorized as "Compact Kitchens" and you'll find a lot of interesting "mini" appliances if you do a Google search.

Here's what I recently ran across that looks similar to the kitchen above:

These are gererally for hotels, hospitals, and military. That is probably why you can't see too many. I think that ACME is the highest end version. I did a bunch of research when renovating a couple very small studio units a few years back. Here is another link that might be helpful.

Also, be aware of what you are getting. I bought mine from a small, west coast outfit called Cervitor. They are pretty cool to look at. I especially like the 'post-war' looking metal cabinets, but you get what you pay for. Construction is good but not amazing, same for hardware, and in my experience installation. Upside is that they usually build to order, so doing some custom stuff is possible without paying an arm and a leg. You may even be able to get them to let you pick your paint color. No, I don't have hot-pink, metal cabinet/drawer front kitchenettes, but I could have!

Eileen-
I posted this in a different thread than your original one, so you may not have seen it:

http://www.linea-inc.com/categories/kitchen/pantos.html

It's a beautiful kitchenette, but I fear it may be pricey and the only LINEA store appears to be in California. The manufacturer is Driade, ... perhaps you might be able to track down a retialer for it here(?). Just figured I'd provide the link. I'm also a kitchenette owner, and have to decide soon whether to replace my dying unit or reconfigure with something completely different. Good luck and let us know what happens!

I forgot to add that the unit includes sink, refrigerator, cooktop and dishwasher (not so sure if there's an oven though).

The Linea stuff is real pretty, but like Trish said, it's bucks! (I looked at that too.) A good alternative to Linea for people in NYC could be Valcucine, they have a shop downtown, but this is a different world from ACME, or Cervitor. If you have that kind of dough, it would probably be cooler to go to one of the fancy Euro cabinet makers and see if they will do a small unit. Dada, Bulthaup, Boffi, et cetera...

Ice maker, refrigerators, coolers, cooking range equipment, ice cream machines, sugar cane juicers, orange extractor, bakery.
