Good Questions: Where Can You Find Good Metallic Wallpaper Or Paint?

2.28.silver.jpgHello AT,

Does anyone know a good source for a plain silver wallpaper or a really good silver paint? Or could even be a different metallic color?

Thanks! Pinchas

You might consider using Pearl-Ex pigments -- powdered additives that can be mixed into pretty much anything you can think of -- with a clear acylic as a carrier. They are very, very VERY metallic (in just about any shade you can think of) and available at most better art & craft supply places. I've used them over large areas as a pearly glaze, but not at full strength to produce a metallic look. Unfortunately, I can't recommend a source if you need a lot of it. I recommend picking up a small canister at a craft store and a small container of Polycrylic at your local hardware store and experimenting till you get the look you want.

wolf gordon makes a product called scuffmaster. It has a metallic line that I have used on many different occasions. There are two different products that they carry, one is a sprayed on version and the other is a paint on version. After having both installed I can honestly say that if you are going to use a metallic paint you should use a sprayed on method unless you love looking at paint strokes. Zolatone is another company that makes a similar spray on method. Innovations in wallcovering makes a few nice metallic wallpapers. check out maya romanoff for some gold and aluminum leaf papers.

Porters does metallic paints.
In the U.S. they're at www.sydneyharbourpaints.com.

yeah, ralph lauren has a bunch of really nice metallic shades (not just limited to silvers and golds) - I painted a wall in a metallic turquois of theirs and it came out beautifully!

i used benjamin moore metallic silver glaze to paint an entire huge wall in my loft... well, i didn't, the painters did - but they tell me that it was very tough to use and get a solid metallic effect. we ended up using a faux finish so that it looks like brushed silver - it looks great, but it wasn't what we first intended. apparently, it's hard to keep a wet edge with the glaze. the other thing to know is that it's very very very expensive, so perhaps better used for small areas or furniture, and not enormous 15 foot high walls. also, btw, the end effect of a metallic wall is not as glaring as one might expect - it's actually kind of subtle.

As someone who has spent the last four days stripping layer after layer of wallpaper, I find the new wallpaper trend offensive. I was on board until I had to deal with removing it. So, for your own sanity when you decide it's time to change up the metallic look, go with paint!

We just used Ralph Lauren silver paint at the Dining by Design event: see Barry Rice/Viking - the structure was wood, painted silver. It was warm and subtle and really lovely.

I've used the Ralph Lauren Regency Metallic paints from Home Depot on walls and furniture with great success. They are a more muted shine, like hammered metal, but very elegant.

Yes, Ralph Lauren does have a line of metallic paints. I just used the teal one (can't remember the actual name of it) and it looks awesome! Nice saturated color with shimmer that looks lighter and darker depending on the angle you're looking at it from.

There was another thread recently about metallic paints you may want to do a search for.

Maya Romanoff for metallic wallcoverings ... to the trade but divine ... you also could use what is commonly called silver tea paper ... it was a hallmark of Rose Cumming and Ruby Ross Wood (1920s decorators) and the late, great Sister Parish ... good modern versions of tea paper can be found at Donghia and Stark (Heavy Metal Collection) ... you could always paste up squares of silvery paper from Kate's Paperie and get a similar effect ...

Almost forgot ... replicating the decor of his own apartment, Billy Name, one of Andy Warhol's crowd, used aluminum foil and silver spray paint on the walls of the Factory in 1963!

I must have experimented with every single kind of imaginable finish to find the shinest silver- from paper, to silver leaf, to paint, and found that silver radiator paint is the best! I kid you not it's the cheapest and easiest way to get a super shiny silver finish, I've got it covering one wall of my apartment and when the sun shines, it just glows beautifully.

readingglasses - that sounds pretty cool (pasting up squares of fancy paper) - cool enough to consider trying it....

I'm also a fan of the RL wall paint. I used the silver for my bedroom and it looks fantastically luxe. The paint is also really good quality. I only needed a little over a can!

I've always wanted to try brown Kraft paper, applied in squares, then painted with silver metallic paint... might need some final coat of sealer, and not sure the paper would hold up to the application, but it seems like it could yield a unique end result.

As a graphic designer, I've always loved the look of metallic inks on uncoated paper, so I was thinking this approach might replicate the same quality.

If DIY is not in your future, I second Innovations and Maya. I also believe Donghia does wallpapers now.

thank you so much, I'll try some of that Ralph Lauren paint, and maybe some radiator paint too.

I tried and liked Benjamin Moore's new metallic glaze - but it's expensive and goes on pretty thin. However, it gives a nice 'subtle' metallic look - def. metallic, but not so in your face as a lot of metallic paints. We ended up painting over it (it didn't go well with an adjacent red wall,) but would try using it again somewhere else. I wrote about it in more detail here:

good luck!
