Good Questions: Where to Put the Towel Hooks??

5-10--tile2.jpgHello AT,

We just remodeled a bathroom with Waterworks tile. White 2" x3" subway, turquoise trim across the middle and a back wall of white and turquoise bamboo glass. It is really nice.

There is a tub and separate shower. I know you can't see the bathroom but any suggestions on where to hang towel hooks? Do you think the back of the door or hang hooks on the tiled wall?

Thanks, Phyllis

Dear Phyllis,

We'd really like to see the bathroom, but barring that, we would do BOTH. We love to have one hook near the tub or the shower for a transitional towel or two and to have a few on the back of the door for more hidden storage and daily drying.

Anyone else??

It would be good to have a drying spot that's *not* the back of the door too... most backs-of-doors don't get a lot of cooling air flow, especially in the humidity of the bathroom.

I second both - dry towels should be within reach of the dripping wet person. And more than one person in the house means you need lots of space for towels to dry.

Speaking of which, I have a strong preference for bars over hooks. Towels never get dry on hooks.

I've installed double towel bars everywhere in my bathroom - just from Ikea, but likely there's a higher end version if you're in any way philosophically opposed to those clever Swedes. Double bars are fantastic - one towel can dry on the back one while the front one holds fresh towels. Double bars wouldn't work on the back of a door, though - they're too deep, and you'd never be able to open the door fully.

Or copy hotels, and install a luggage rack high above your toilet for fresh towels.

Observe how you move in the room. You want towels to be handy. If you step out of the shower and position yourself in front of the sink for all additional grooming, it's pointless to hang towels out of arm's reach.

Go about your business tomorrow and pay attention to how you operate.

Where you can reach them, where they will dry quickly enough, and where they don't obscure the most expensive wow factor in your new bath.
