Good Questions: Which Bed Should My Fiance & I Get?

Atlantico 014 Bed

Hello AT,

My fiance and I are in the process of purchasing a new platform bed as our first piece of co-purchased furniture and I thought it would be good to get AT's input on options so that we don't miss anything and make the right choice...

6-5-wood-bed2.jpgWhile the existing bedroom furniture is classic mission style in cherry, we are looking to update to a more contemporary style. We have seen two options that we both like, including Atlantico's 014 bed and DWR's Leggero. What are your thoughts on these options?

With the DWR option, I am afraid of having a hard time coordinating with the beech ply. What does the AT collective think? Are there any other great options that we have not considered?

Thanks as always, Craig

Dear Craig,

Personally, we really like the Atlantico option. They have great wood, and you'll be taking something into your home that will last for many years. The DWR Leggero is very cool, but not as substantial in our eyes.

We'd want something that will really stand up on wedding night ;-).

Anyone else??

How funny! The first piece of furniture I purchased with my fiance was a Leggero bed, and we love it. It doesn't look very substantial, but the base is constructed in a very interesting way - both strong and flexible. We've been very pleased with its quality. The Atlantico bed looks lovely, too.

I just replaced my Ikea Malm with the West Elm platform bed (chocolate) without a headboard.

I haven't tested the bed in "wedding night" levels, but I love how I can see past where the headboard is to my wall. I'm adding a lit floor partition (100" by 60") to put on the wall with my bed about 2 feet from anything on all sides. In the future, if I get bored with the "openness" I think it will be fun to look for original headboard treatments.

Oh...I live in a good sized loft with high ceilings and a skylight so the low height of the bed is perfect.

My husband and I have the Leggero bed and love it. It's hardly insubstantial. It's airy, which I love, and super easy to clean under. It feels like it breathes. The Atlantico looks too heavy and bulky and woody for my taste.

LM,

Let me go a step further with you if I may...what do you coordinate that beech ply color with? What complimentary pieces did you purchase? Thanks!

We have the 011 Atlantico bed (bought it through Karkula) and love it. It is the most solid piece of furniture I've ever owned. I"m sure it will last a very long time and it also looks fantastic.

I like both beds a lot. From the purely aesthetic standpoint, I prefer the Atlantico bed, and I am sure it is very soundly made. From the really boring, practical standpoint, it would be tough to clean under (I'm a clean freak). If you can live with dust bunnies or don't mind moving the whole thing occasionally to vacuum under, I'd go with that one.

I'll second the comments about the Leggero bed. The slat design for the platform allows for the airy/minimal look while actually being strong enough for a good wedding night.

I managed to match a maple dresser from Work Bench with the beech. I have an acrylic side table and a zinc cube side table, both from Conran's. I believe the Leggero also comes in a darker, more cherry wood looking stain, as well. Conran's also used to sell this bed. They may still.

I should have clarified - I have the Leggero bed in mocha. The only other furniture in my bedroom is an antique dresser with a very warm cherry finish. It has worn black knobs, and I love the way it offsets the dark wood of the bed.

I'm not sure what you have in mind for the beech ply, though.

I got my "Zen Bed" from "DowntownFurnitureNYC.com" There's no headboard but I love it. There are others to choose from that are similar to what you're looking for like the "bt-quadro"

I really like the Atlantico bed. I have never been a huge fan of the Leggero because the proportions and thin platform look more midcentury than contemporary. You should also take a look at the Tau bed by John Kelly (Designpublic.com for pictures - there are any number of places you can order it from) as it has the option of underbed storage. Also, take a look at the Baronet Brasilia bed (www.baronet.ca) which is also available from a number of NY and online sellers.

I like the Leggero as well, plus the Ludlow and Worth Bed as well, link below:

We had the Leggero and found it was squeaky and we almost broke our shins on the wood platform as it is thin and sticks out. We ended up returning it.

My wife and I also were tempted to buy the Leggero and ended up buying the Case Study bed from DWR. We liked the way it looked and it seemed a bit more sturdy than the rest. However, it worked great when we were in a place with no stairs and huge doors..but now we have a smaller place with very narrow doors and stairs. Whatever you choose, I would keep in mind transportation issues. I think the leggero would have been alot lighter and easier to move.

I like the Atlantico.

We just ordered the Bossa from EQ3. I like the fact the Bossa has loads of storage. Am a bit anxious about my virtual purchase.

i have the alu bed from DWR. it's sturdy. it doesn't break (being pretty much 85% metal and all...) and it pretty much disappears. the alu bed's more about the sheets, pillows, etc than anything else.

i like it. but i would've gone with the atlantico bed first (that was my first choice) if it hadn't been for the $$$.

Skye,

I share your concern with the virtual purchase. In case anyone is wondering, we are going with an Atlantico (though a different version - #011). But of course, there is nowhere in NYC to view an actual bed! De La Espada, nor any of their retailers has one on the floor. So we are going on a bit of faith here.

Thanks for everyone's input.

If I had to choose between the two, I would prefer
the Atlantico over Leggero, since it seems more solid.

However, both beds have sharp wood edges sticking out
on all four corners, and I would not choose such types
after seeing my husband having knee bruises from time
to time (unless your bedroom is very spacious...)

I would also suggest to check on the wooden slats,
especially withe the platform beds, since some of them
can crack with excessive pressure and need to be
reinforced or replaced.

I have a 5-year-old Club8 platform bed which sqeaks all the time and the screw holding the bed frame and headboard
comes off every now and then. I hope to replace it with
something more solid and that would last longer...maybe the Alu Bed w/ upholstered Headboard (DWR) or any bed with steel slats (Room and Board) would be my next choice.
