Good Questions: Which Fabric for my Sink Skirt?

6-11-sink-skirt-3.jpg

Hello AT,

Which fabric should I buy to replace the plaid sink skirt? I hate the plaid, but I love sink skirts. My walls are mustardy yellow, the linoleum is off white, the sink is white porcelain and my kitchen table which is way of the other side of the room, ( and I mean way ) has red legs. Hurry, before PurlSoho runs out of the fabrics!

Thanks, Jessica

A isn't Amy Butler's Lotus collection? Anyhoo, it's more kitcheny. Green and soothing.

I had to go with the first one, because I think it would take longer to tire of it, and I think it looks more period-friendly, but then again the idea of the spirit of the second one is a little more cheery.

I love B :) I usually am more for soothing, muted colors at home, but for some reason I feel like the kitchen should always be springy and light - almost playful. The second fabric choice is all of those things I think, without being obnoxious, plus all the bright colors pop like crazy against the white sink and stove!

Please please do a nice box pleat when you do the skirt it will look a touch dressed up - but oh so lovely for your sink! And I too love B...

I love the floral!! If you don't mind, what is the name of it?

Great pattern and all those colors give you a lot to work with elsewhere in the room/apartment.

I selected 'A' - but both are great patterns and will work well (IMHO).
I do agree with NYCtexan that a more tailored pleat would be a nice alternate to the traditional gathered skirt.

I like B, and I also like your sink. My mom had one like that. Nice and roomy, and I prefer porcelain to stainless steel.

I like B. It makes the black items in your kitchen pop more - plus it looks more upbeat to me.

I voted for all three... by mistake. I think b, though.

Fabric B is amazing! Now I wish my sink wasn't attached to mediocre looking cabinets. I hate renting.

Just like what the others said, B gives your kitchen more life. Perhaps it will tie your walls and table legs together as well.

i was instantly attracted to B.

I voted B, too--but I really like all three together. I would replace "a" with something a bit different--picking up on the red--but the same scale.

Looks fabulous.

i also chose a since it will be the easiest to live with the longest...i just think youll tire of the large flowers far too quickly

they are both great fabrics, though, so either way i think youll be happy!

Add drapery weights so the tailored pleats will hang nicely :) I like both fabrics, and envision the flower print with a 3" red border on the bottom.

I love the crisp, clean look of the flowers. The other pattern, excuse me for saying so, looks more like it would be at home in Mayberry RFD.

I actually like the fabric with the flowers better, but voted for the little moths! Being that it's in the kitchen and below the sink where dirty plates, etc will pass above, I would think the large white areas of the fabric would dirty very easily. With the way the pattern is, any stains in this area would be very conspicuous! Although I love it less, the moth fabric would be much more conducive to kitchen accidents. For me, the decision would boil down to my love for the flower print vs the amount of maintenance I'd be willing to do!

Would the one with the white background get dirty? I'm not sure how tidy you are while washing dishes, but I bet I'd find a way to splash dirty water on it.

I prefer the plaid!

But of A and B, I'd choose A. I think that flower print'd be better in small doses as in this picture. But as a full skirt... that's a lot of bright white and flowers for such a high-traffic, often-seen are, isn't it?

Hmm, I guess I'm too late here, but I also think the B fabric would be better as a smaller piece and may look a little hectic here. I think a more ordered pattern like A might be less jarring as a large piece.

I voted B because it is cheerful and the background is white which matches the white oven. The other choice appears to have a beige-ish background color, but it could just be the picture or my monitor.

that's really funny--i just bought the SAME fabric to hang over my sofa!

I chose A because 1) I love green, 2) I think the pattern would be easier to live with over the years.

However, that being said, if you LOVE B and are more a B kind of person, go with B.

The two fabrics are VERY different, so I think it's more a personality preference and what works with everything else in viewing area.

Thank you Lisa from VA; fabric B is "Pink Zinnias" from Alexander Henry. It's available as shown on an off-white background, and on a black background. Yummy all around. Thanks for posting it!
