Good Questions: Who Designed These Upholstered Chairs?

9-3-great-chairs.jpg
Dear ATNY,

I'm looking to replace my dining room chairs and have come across these ones several times — most recently on Feelmorehuman.com website. However, they do not sell them. They look like Eames chairs, but I don't think that they are. I love the warm wood tones mixed with the softer look of upholstery. Do you know where I can find them?

Thanks,
Aimee

Aimee: We believe they are upholstered Eames DCW chairs, but we haven't had any luck finding a retailer that sells an upholstered version. Anyone?

Ps yes they are pretty much and eames knock offs-but I have 2 in my office, and for chinese goods they are quite nice, much better than their upholstery.

They look just like Thonet chairs.

great, now I want these chairs instead of the ones I ordered from R&B. Except I'd want to replace the vinyl with a natural fabric. Does anyone know if that's easy to do with these chairs? I wish I could see one in person!

Those chairs are the gus line. In fact, the photo is of the designers' own home. I have one of their couches and was able to see their product in person by finding a local boutique who carried their line. Hope this helps!

The upholstered seat and back cushion simply screw off. They would be quite easy to re-upholster. If you go to their website gusmodern.com you can check out the dealers who carry them. If you live in the Portland, OR area HIP furniture carries them in stock, so you could see them in person. I have one myself and they are quite comfortable.

I have the all wood versions, but are vintage Thonet. I also have two Thonets that are upholstered, one white one orange. All were purchased on ebay for a reasonable price. They look great in my dining room!

Yup... the table, bench and chairs are all from Gus* (www.gusmodern.com) and the photo is from the designer's home. Gus is based in Toronto and www.stylegarage.com carries most of their retail line (conveniently just one block from my loft!) StyleGarage will also do some custom work... they made a custom size and fabric Gus bench for me :)

they can be disassembled and shipped flat, but make sure the seller labels which legs are front and back, they're not interchangeable.

Thanks so much for everyone's help! They have them in NY at Bobby Berk home (which I found after reading the sales alert on ATNY). And karmabum, the price on those chairs makes a trip to Toronto pretty tempting!
