Hello AT,
I bought this great sofa on Craig's List. Could anyone tell me a bit about it and who it might be made by ? I also feel the art piece is now a bit high, as the old sofa back was taller. It is a really heavy wood piece and awfully complicated to hang straight- how bad is it?
Thanks, Melinda

Maybe Vladimir Kagan? There is a leg style similar to yours still on his site. http://www.vladimirkagan.com/vkagan_sofa.html
You scored.
That's a fabulous couch! Where did you get the equally fabulous art above the couch?
my untrained eye thinks the artwork looks fine where it is.
my untrained eye also loves both pieces =)
Hard to judge about the art height without seeing where the ceiling begins.
Have you considered a cleat method of hanging it?
I don't have anything constructive to say... I just wanted everyone who lives in great craigslisting areas to know how deeply jealous I am (click my name for the sexy finds we get on phx-craigslist).
That is an absolutely gorgeous sofa, though... the lamp beside it looks tailor-made to sit *right* there. The art is wonderful as well... but yeah, it is a little high :(
I want that couch!
Yes, Kagan-esque lines, but could be by anyone.
The art above is fine as is.
Have I mentioned that I MUST have that couch!!!
(Great find -- congrats!)
Wow. Great sofa, great lamp and great art. It doesn't look too high to me, but sometimes it's hard to tell from a photo.
Here's a helpful standard, I think I read here at AT and has really helped me in hanging my art. The middle of your art should be 57" from the floor. It turns out that 57" is about eye level for most people and the middle should be eye level. If it's off a little I wouldn't bother moving it because of the difficulty factor. And it's so gorgeous who's gonna notice?
I would love to see more of your place.
Melanie - Craigslist in Atlanta is a total bummer too :(
The art above the couch doesn't really look terribly high to me. If it was a major drag to hang it the first time and moving it is going to mean repairing the wall (filling in newly visible nail holes, sanding, painting, etc.) I'd be tempted to leave it where it is. If you decide to move it 4"-6" lower would probably do the trick.
RE: Height..General rule of thumb is that the center of the piece of art should be about 68" from the floor. But that should be adjusted based on celing height, what it is going over...Best thing to do is make a cardboard template the same size as the piece of art and use 68" as your starting point. Have a friend move the cardboard (much easier and lighter) up or down until it feels right for you.
galleries generally hang art at 58" center - i think 68" center, in most cases, would be too high.
True- very Kagan-esque....but so many designers were emulating this style back in the day that it really could be anyone- no marks on the underside or lables on any of the upholstery?
Also-the art is freaking AH-MAZING. I love. Where did you get it? It's large font printing blocks right?
So is it 57" or 68"? That seems like quite a spread.
I echo the craigs envy as well...
actually, Al, that's 57".
though i've heard anything between 57 and 60. 68" is definitely way too high to center most pieces of art in the average home.
you can, however, err a tad on the high side for art over a couch or other similar situation. and one should also pay attention to the piece's height in relation to other elements on the walls -- for instance the height of door frames. if your art is within a couple feet of a door on the same wall, and the top of the piece is only a little higher or lower than the door, you might want to line it up with the door rather than stick to the 57" standard.
i also think the art is fine as is. it may not be gallery standard, but to even a trained eye it looks fine.
But most galleries don't have sofas beneath the art.
Plus, the standard in those cases is intended for a standing viewer.
And it TOTALLY depends on the size of the piece, whether its matted, the height of the ceiling, etc.
That measurement rule is totally overplayed.
Beeeutiful. I don't think the art is too high. I think it would look great if you added a little strip of color around the artwork to offset all the brown. I'm jealous of the art, couch and the lamp. Great find.
not really. also, read my 3rd paragraph, wherein i said exactly that.
most pieces larger than about 16 x 20 should DEFINTELY be mounted to 57-ish, unless they're over a couch. and anything much smaller often looks best grouped in an arrangement which, is centered at roughly 57".
and even then, the 24 x 36 piece above my couch is centered at maybe 60 inches, tops.
68 is definitely NOT standard, and i can't imagine it looking good in most situations. there are exceptions to every rule, however.
Opoponax-Does this apply to the mantle of fireplaces as well?
Wow, love the sofa and the art. Color me envious.
Thanks all for your consructive help - I thinkg I am going to use all your wonderful info and add to art...
I am going to collect various size wood stamp letters and hang them in the space between couch and art saying
should be 57 lower 4 general rule 68 currently 54
stand on toes bend knees
I do think it should be 4" lower but from genereral consensus it is not so bad so I may leave it as is. Interestingly it is now 54"h center. A cleat drilled in may damage wood block and it is too heavy to glue.
The art was from a fleamarket. Thanks for the Kagan tip I will email and ask if it is made by them.
I have no money so just to give people hope (sofa $400. art $250. Lamp $20)
Wow, melinda! You're quite the savvy shopper. All 3 of those pieces are fantastic.
i dont know how tall you all are, but 68 center would be close to 6 ft high which means all of us less than 6 ft tall would be looking at the bottom of all the artwork in the world!
great finds!
For all those who are jealous of craigslist heavy cities, take heart, we are probably having a bigger problem with bed bugs as a result of all this trading as well.
My understanding of the whole "hanging height rule" is that it should be roughly eye level to however you use the space. If it is in a hallway where you are standing 5'7" would be okay. If it is in a living room where you are primarily sitting, it would be much lower. Either way I think it looks great although 4" lower would be okay too. I wish I could find a sofa like that on craigs list!
Maybe it all depends on people's height. I do kitchen design (custom i should mention) for over 6 years and not everyone goes with standard height of where wall cabinets should start or even have base cabinets higher or lower. So even if there are rules on height of hanging wall art i think you should consider height of ceilings and your height as well.
Great finds by the way. LOVED sofa. For those who want something similar i think i saw something very look alike at ABC home where i got my couch. Good luck
art work too.
Great couch. The rule for art above furniture or a mantle in my house is I measure the total blank space there will be above/below the art and allocate 1/3 of it below and 2/3 above. This seems to connect it to whatever it is being hung above.
That being said, I don't think yours looks bad where it is.
