Hello AT,
I have a vintage 1960's Eames lounge chair and ottoman that is in desperate need of being reupholstered and 'restuffed'. I have contacted Herman Miller about having the chair redone and it seems that the costs to have this done by them would far exceed the price of just buying a new chair. Does anyone have any recommendations of people in New York who have done similar work and done it well?
thanks, max

I've saved this link in case I've needed them... I've heard great things, but unfortunately don't have any first-hand experience. Good luck!

yeah!
I got a couple of file cabinets from my old office, missing some hardware, and Herman Miller has been very bad about installation instructions, and kept trying to charge me $1000's to send a professional installer!!
anyways, there seem to be some new york/east coast reccommended re-upholsterers at this link: (good old martha!)

I had a similar question a little while ago and someone directed me to this site:

You can buy new cushions, piece by piece, or for the whole chair.
Also check out retroredo.com.
Good luck!
Call Daniel Donnelly, there is also a website at www.danieldonnelly.com
he restored my 1952 orginal Eames rosewood loungechair, Herman Miller actually referred to him saying he is the best ion the country for this. You can see pictures if te restored chairs under House Tours on this website , it;s under "michael's Mid century nest"
This guy had a profile written about him in the times, he is supposed to be AMAZING, Sol Ovadia, owner of Prestige. I've heard he was an urban myth, but this NYTimes article says he's the real deal...

You may also want to contact Room and Board in Soho. They sell the Eames lounger and may know of a place to refer you so that you can get it restored.
hello all- i am looking to purchase a classic eames lounge chair (used), but have a very narrow hallway (27").. does anyone know if these chairs can be disassembled, or if the arms/legs come off? I'd hate to have to hoist it up the fire escape. thanks!
Herman Miller will never get a cent of my money after learning of this.
remember if your vintage eames has the original rosewood shell, it is worth refurbishing, since this endangered wood is no longer available and the value of your chair has increased. good luck.
Amato is the place to go - i have used them many a time - they always exceed my expectations!

They did a geat job restoring our Eames sofa. Replaced seat inserts, replaced webbing, cleaned and polished leather for $725.
Rae, Sandra - could you provide contact info on d'Amato? Thanks
thanks everyone for the suggestions. i think i will contact prestige and see how much they want. i received a quote from hume modern furniture this afternoon and was pretty shocked - $2600. that price is not much cheaper than what you can buy a new one for these days....although the rosewood apparently makes it worth the refurb....
thanks again for all the help....
I bought a knock-off (Plycraft?) 60s era Eames-style lounger on Craigslist for $50. It looks great (considering), except the ottoman is missing one button. Given the price and the fact that it's a knock-off, I'd rather not spend many $100s to both find or make a button and then fix it. Does anyone have a suggestion (fyi, I'm in Boston)?? Thanks
Hi I had my Eames 670 and 671 recently redone
by retro redo in Tulsa Okla at first i thought why am i sending it all the way to Tulsa Okla from NYC
I had the pads put in a box and shipped for 30.00 dollars
I was so pleased with Lloyd Fadem the owner he was so nice to do business with and so very helpful.
I talked to him 5 times and every time he was so lovely . He found a Spinny Beck leather for me in a cream color and charged me 1000.00 to redo the chair pads , and ottoman with new zippers and new padding .
I had read several comments about his company all positive but after doing business with
I was so pleased I told him when he was in NYC stop by SOHO to see the chair how great it turned out. to say the least I am pleased and am glad i found out about him on AT.
Claire NYC NY USA
I jsut read Claires commnets about her Eames
lounge chair.
I just had Retro Redo redo by Plycraft chair in black vinyl and it turned out great. The chair had been in my family since the 60's and was in a dire need of a makeover.
I sent it to Fadem in Oklahoma and he charge me 600.00 including the vinyl and they really did a nice job I feel like the chair was ready for the junk pile Fadem even told me how to clean the chair wood up with oil and steel wood and pledge, It looks really nice and I have two Eames Hermna miller bucket chairs to send to him he said that most people redo them with the Girard fabric ,
and told me to look athe maharam web site
I found some great fabric and shipped the two charis off this morning. glad i found that company also. ( I feel they were just as expensive as any one around here even though i had to ship to him for 60 dollars round trip.
Wally
I used Hume modern last year.
Alfi was a nice fellow but he was not afraid to charge a fortune to redo my chair , At the time i could find no one and was a sucker for the Rosewood being perfect , since then i talked to a girl that had sent her chair to Herman Miller to be recluded and but new shock mounts on she said it cost her around 400 plus shipping, and they fixed it perfect( why shouldn't they is what i said) she said she heard about Hume in Calf, and said everyone knows he is the most expensive but very few people fix the rosewood I have since learned that any good cabinet maker or trim carpenter can fix those chair shocks just buy them from Hume and have soem one local put them on with very high grade epoxy . good luck
