Good Questions: Wholesale Flower Market?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgDear AT,

Is there a way that consumers can shop at the wholesale flower markets in the Flower District?

I saw these carnation arrangements in December Martha Stewart Living that I would like to make for my party.

Carnations have a bad reputation, the deli flower of NYC, but these arrangements are just what I was looking for. I have a hard time coming up with flowers that will compliment my old, clear Fostoria china. I just need to figure out how to get tons of perfect, richly colored carnations.

Thanks, Chris

We have shopped in the flower district on 28th street in the mornings and found that they will sell to strangers as long as the you aren't buying one flower. If you want a big bunch, that's fine and if you want to belong to a company, use your business card and just go for it.

We suggest walking the strip off of Broadway going west and doing it in the morning between 7-8am. (Thanks, Chris, and sorry we didn't get to this sooner!) MGR

Thank you so much for answering my question! Using my regular business card is a great idea.

In the end, I didn't make my ambitious Martha flower arrangement because I couldn't figure out how to get that many carnations. Plus,a friend gave me a gift certificate to Posies (212-675-6190), a new flower shop in the village. They were extremely nice. I explained that I wanted a purple, Christmas-y arrangement in my own vases and I got two beautiful arrangements for $60. They were light and airy and just what I wanted. I have been so let down by florists charging alot more before. Having someone else do flowers let me focus on food, the bar and the guests too.

Sometime soon though, I am going to get back to making this Martha carnation thing. I cut out the pictures and saved it with my Christmas stuff.

I bought my wedding flowers in the flower district, and had a great experience-- with the exception of one or two places, all sell to "private" citizens. Many of the shops will ask you to pay in cash. Go very early in the morning a week or two before, wander around, and talk to the owners about custom orders (this way you will be sure of getting what you want when you want it.) Some places specialize in carnations and daisies and others are higher end. You should be able to get carnations for 25 cents each. You will need to condition the flowers yourself, but thats easy-- strip the leaves and snip the stems at an angle under water. Then store in a bucket with flower food (I found that this worked better than Ms. Stewart's homemade recipies.) Shears, buckets, and food (and any vase/ container imaginable) can be purchased at Jamali Garden Supply on the same street.

Thanks for useful information. As for me, I prefer to buy flowers in shops, where you can chose what you are looking for. Ordering flowers is more comfotable, but there is no confidence that you will get what you want.

Happy New Year!
