Hello AT,
I was at Esca last night for dinner and they had the most exquisite worn, long work table in the center of the dining room. It had drawers all along both sides, a shelf along the bottom, and a separate butcher block fitted on one end. It was a beautiful chestnut color, with the top a deep brown from lots of breadmaking and meat tenderising :).
Do you know anywheres in NYC to get worn, solid, used, classic worktables? This had so much more character than anything new, I would only want something half the size.
Thanks, Sara
We think that would be considered a Farm table (typically French by name) and an antique. For that quality, you would need to snoop around antique dealers. There used to be a great place called Ar Brieze on Bedford Street, but they closed and we can't find them. We found some here:
Country French Antiques - 400 Bleecker
Les Pierres Antiques - 369 Bleeker
Lantiques.com England. Sorry.
JML French antiques
L'esprit
You get the idea. If everything is too expensive, you can go to Barnitques and have one made with a nice old patina on it. You can also try Staples in Massachusetts. (Thanks, Sara!) MGR

I love those old tables too. There are a couple of them in my church . . . in the place where the priests get dressed, even one in the cafeteria kitchen where they make lunch for the school kids. They are treasures of the church, not soon to be parted with, but maybe some church that is remodeling or something? ABC Carbet has a bunch of them but they are out of my price range.
My "farm" table is from Trailer Park in Park Slope. They take special orders for farm tables, they say they are made out old Amish barn wood. I love mine.
If you're ever heading up to Montreal there's a place on the way back where I just bought a midcentry 9 foot long reflectoire table (probably used in a school library or lunch room. They have others for $300 or less. Email me of info & a pic.
I sent this question in quite awhile ago and the perfect thing for me was posted on this little-known blog, I think they were in the NYT last Sunday,

look no further!
This is really the sort of thing that you should leave town to find. My parents live in rural america, and you can easily big old farm tables for reasonable prices. I remember seeing a butcher block ten years ago for a hundred-something in a big antiques store. It had been used so much that it had the surface had this wave a good six inches high from all the chopping.
My farm table is from Moon River Chattel in Williamsburg. They do an amazing job of refinishing tables, but managing to leave just the right amount of wear. The shop is small, but if you ask, they'll take you across the street to look at the tables waiting to be refinished.

Hi,
I just stumbled across your website in google.
I am the proprietor of lantiques, an antiques business in Sussex, England supplying French farmhouse tables. lantiques was mentioned in a 'readers letter' on one of your webpages - dated Tues Feb 01. I am curious about the source of the information posted. Where did it originate?
Many thanks

...carrying on from my last few words, if you are looking for an authentic French farmhouse table you will see a good selection on our website at www.lantiques.com
We can arrange shipping from our door in the UK to yours in the US. Transit time is usually 3-4 weeks. True, we are not the cheapest but we do have some of the finest authentic examples around.
Many of our tables are sold to US dealers buying in Europe for resale in the US. Buying from our website means you are buying at virtually trade price and therefore beating the system.
Email me for more details at info@lantiques.com or call direct to UK on 0044 1798 344020

Hi, I found your webpage surfing the web for French farmhouse tables in Sussex and French farm tables in Sussex. On the subject of French life style, we have been looking for a table of this kind for some months now and see constantly two descriptions - farm table and farmhouse table or French farm table and French farmhouse table. I assume both descriptions refer to the same type of table. Can anyone confirm? The same goes for fruitwood. Exactly what kind of wood is this? - cherry wood, pearwood, applewood or all three?
NB anyone else on a similar 'crusade' Petworth in West Sussex is a good place to start.

I have a friend that bought a beautiful antique dark wood butcher block island. It is very heavy and huge. It cost her $500.00. I have been looking for one for a long time. If you know where one is I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Misty Barnett
Hi...
I am really like the look of the Big Sur Table (http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=881&f=14071) & bench from crate and barrel... but really would rather purchase something more authentic. I love the light colored wood... anyone have any ideas?
yep, that big sur table is one heck of a table. love the bench as well. it is just too much $$ when there are antiques and custom made tables available at the same price. i'm on the hunt for that perfect table as well and ikea just won't due.

I'm looking for something similar...yet different.
An antique pine hutch. I already have the huge table, which I bought at country Home and Comfort, which no longer has a selection of this type of furniture.
Barntiques is a little too homemade-looking for my taste. I'm looking for antique French pine, something like that. But not for mult-thousands of dollars. Those are easy to find.
Or maybe I should accept the fact that the Pierre Deux era is just so ovah.
