Hanging a Charley Harper Skate Deck as Art?
Good Questions

Q: We're longtime Apartment Therapy readers and Charley Harper fans, and we've just purchased a Harper skateboard deck by Habitat. But, now we're stumped about how and where to incorporate it in our home! Is there special hardware available for hanging decks on the wall?...

We really don't want to damage it, so something removable, and preferably invisible, would be perfect. Should we rig up plate hangers, or use fishing line to hang it? The deck has small holes that you can see in the closeup photo. How do we incorporate this into our art collection? As you can see in the photo of our living room, everything else on the walls is rectilinear, framed art. How do we make this work? Help! Thanks,
Maya and Michael

Editor: I'm not sure how Bradford affixed his Skateboard Headboard to the wall — who has suggestions?

It's very easy to hang

you take two piece of wood 2"x4"x4"

you screw it together and screw it to your wall. After that you screw your skateboard on.

Or, you simply thread a string (or fishing line) through the holes for the truck bolts and tie it in a loop. What you attach it to is up to you, but the removable 3M hooks are great for this. A small nail works, too, though.

Thanks, Aaron! This is Maya, the proud and befuddled new co-owner of this deck. For more of a context, see other photos of our apartment:

Samo de Quebec, thanks for your tip, but I'd love to find a solution that doesn't require making too many holes in the wall. Your idea does sound fairly simple, though.

Have you seen the needlework patterns Purl Soho has of Charley Harper artwork?

I think Samo had a good idea because then it would stick off the wall a bit, which would be nice for this application.

You really only need one screw from the2x4 to the wall if you are going into a stud. :)

Ooh, I love the "Hare's Breadth" print by Charley Harper hanging in your living room. This is a beautiful-looking deck, and I would just hang it grouped with the other art on your walls. By the way, all the images on those Habitat decks, plus many, many others are available as prints via Fabulous Frames & Art:

to avoid damaging the piece, these and only these should be used:

I have a skateboard deck as art on my wall. I use heavy-duty fishing line to hang it on a picture wall hook. It looks fantastic and is sturdy/safe.

My husband has a whole collection of decks hanging in his studio. We just hot-glued necklace chains or jute rope and hung them from a nail. (This is much easier if the opposite side has grip tape attached, I guess.)

as a girlfriend of a skateboard for life guy, we have a very "beautiful" display on our hallway walls and like Aaron, we used clear fishing line tied back with a loop and hung on one single little nail- but I think a 3M would work fine... it really is the classic way to do it, so if you want to be legit about- work it out that way! :)

sk8ology.... really? i don't think a real skateboarder would ever buy a product that replaces alphabetical letters for numerals, or use anything that costs that much either.

For my son's used, smashed and trashed decks, I screw them to these simple wooden shelf brackets from IKEA. The decks work terrific as bookshelves: The grip tape helps keep his paperbacks from sliding off.

Maybe not the best idea for these objets d'art, but I thought I throw the idea out there while we're on topic.

Cool digs, by the way.

While I can't offer a solution to hang the deck I did want to comment on incorporating it into you space. In my opinion you don't need to worry about how it will look with your framed artwork. I appreciate you posting your Flickr photo stream and think you have wonderful eclectic taste and by adding this additional element it should fit right in with your style! I would love to see where it ends up in your home. I added you as a contact on Flickr so I can go back and oggle your home some more and maybe see in the future where you do hang the deck.

There's a Chai House in Seattle currently showing an exhibit of skate decks. They've used hemp/jute rope, but yours might look cool if you used a bright nylon cord (sold at any large hardware store). You could hide the knot behind the board, and you'll get a pretty clean look. As for hanging it on the wall, I'd use a decorative hook of some sort.

Great place, by the way- love the stair-rail.
