Identify This Large, Low Couch?
Good Questions

7-29-id-sofa.jpg
Q -I am trying to buy new couch for my large family room — 24'x18'. It needs a solid anchoring couch (preferably 90" - 100" +). I saw the PERFECT thing in April's Architectural Digest in a house Thad Hayes had done the interiors on. Of course it gives credits for the fabric, but not the couch and I and desperate to find a long, low track armed couch perfect that I can fit myself, my husband and 3 rambunctious boys on! Any suggestions?

Editor- Often, designers use vintage pieces that are reupholstered (this could be the case here) BUT our readers are sure to have suggestions for something similar! Anyone?

I can't help you with this sofa but wanted to offer an alternative. We wanted to do something similar and ending up using sectional pieces to make a long sofa (My husband wanted a chaise which we added at one end, but you wouldn't have to do that). It may be a more affordable option too. Good luck in your search!

that was probably custom made. giant pieces like that are frequently made to fit the room, and you might want to see if a local upholstery store would do it for you - it's not cheap, but the retailers who tend to carry this style are pretty expensive, too.

look at b&b italia - quite pricey, but they have lots of this kind of thing and are extremely well made.

An affordable choice if you opt to have the sofa custom made is http://www.carolinachair.com/. I considered them when I was looking for a sofa - ended up finding what I wanted in a store but would consider them for future needs.

I'd second the 2 sectional piece suggestion, if you can't find what you are looking for. For instance, I think this sectional is quite fetching:http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=960&f=33620&q=sectionals&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1

If you pushed together the two loveseats for this sofa, you'd end up with about 120 inches of sofa. I have this: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=960&f=25940&q=sectionals&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1 sectional, and its long and low too- although I think its got a slimmer seat depth than the sofa above.

Other modular sofas that might do the trick:

Piazza (no side arms though and the mismatched pillow thing is a little strange)http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=102&f=5170

(Can you tell I was sectional shopping recently?)

This specific sofa is probably from a trade-only showroom.

However, Restoration Hardware has some oversized sofas (Look for the "Grand" versions of their various models)

Florence Knoll's Lounge sofa w/3 seats is 90". Incredibly beautiful. And very expensive.

You might want to check out the sofa company http://www.thesofaco.com

They have a couple of models which look similar and their couches can be customized....I had one of their couches once and foolishly let it slip out the door for what I thought was a better quality sectional. I would give anything to get my couch back now...it was built like a brick house and beautiful too.

I can't be sure but it looks very similar to the M.I.S.S. sofa by Cassina.

http://www.cassina.com/ENG/CATALOGUE/ARMCHAIRS_AND_SOFAS/PRODUCTS/MISS_MUSIC_IMAGE_SOFA_SYSTEM_215228.ASPX

Cassina means top-notch quality and their furniture is quite well-known (and pretty expensive). M.I.S.S. actually stands for Music Image Sofa System -- since it's available with a surround-sound speaker system built into the sofa. They also have a projector that you can have rise out of a console behind the sofa. It's pretty amazing. I've been a fan of the sofa for a few years but haven't had the cash to spend on it. It's available in a few different sizes and virtually any fabric you can think of.

If it's in AD, it's probably custom.

Rizzoli just released a book with Thad Hayes: http://www.rizzoliusa.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780847830817

This sofa is featured in there as well and he mentions he designed it and it's a one-off. But the Holden Sofa from Room & Board is a nice stand in: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=2101&category=rm_living_spaces&subcategory=sofa

Lazar makes a nice long sofa, has a little more of a modern feel to it with wide arms. its very deep about 44" and only 27in high, anyhow look for yourself. I own the big sectional, but you can pair the two 74" for the ends and maybe a 44" in the middle... just a thought ; )

Don't want to bombard you with suggestions but I'm on my own hunt for furniture for our new apartment...so I'm looking at a lot of furniture right now....anyway while wondering through overstock.com I came across this couch which automatically made me think of you and your search. It is not an exact match but is the same style (to my untrained eye)

113 in. L x 40 in. D x 31 in. H > might fit your large crew

I figured...might as well post it...never know if it could be THE ONE for your space....It seems to be high quality for a great price (at least compared to some of the other suggestions...which for me could NEVER make it out of the "if I win the lottery category")

Sorry for the rambling...been alone on the computer for too long for an extrovert:) Please let us know how your search is going..

I have a massive lower level media room (35' X 35') and we recently painted the entire area in a rich Terracotta color (Armaganac from SW) and repolished the 60's era vinyl tile floors (black with terracotta, blue and yellow splatters) to a high gloss finish.
Once done with that, all I kept from the furnishings was my 60" flat panel TV and modern stand and decided to treate myself to some ultra comfy sofas. What I thought was going to be an endless search for some large scale furnishings was ended in under 15 minutes when I came across this sectional and immediately fell in love with it!
http://www.raymourflanigan.com/catalog/details.asp?ID=8923
It is a massive sectional. The basic pieces are sofa, armless love seats, partial armless chaise lounge and an ottoman. The sofas are huge measuring 106" long and are beautiful. I compared them to other more expensive sofas and believe me, you cannot find a high quality and comfortable large scale sofa. They come in a rich chocolate brown or a beautiful beige color. Although the material is a high quality basically indestructable microfiber, it looks like and feels exactly like a rich comfy suede... SO comfortable and SO solid.
I bought three sofas in brown and two ottomans in beige to use as cocktail tables. I have them set up in a U shape with the TV on the open wall. Got to say, the room is fantastic and the style is so modern and contemporary. I don't need any other pieces as these three sofas make the room complete.
A great thing about this sectional is that it comes in two sizes...I believe the length is the same, but the depth is different to fit into smaller places. Of course with the massive size of my room, I took the larger ones. As big as they are, the delivery men had no problem getting them through the door and down the stairs.
The only thing is now that I have them and LOVE the way they feel...I want to go back and pick up a few of the chaise lounges to have off to the side to use as a reading area.
Definately check these sofas out as they are fantastic in design and actually put lines such as Roche Bobois and B&B Italia to shame in quality and they don't cost half a year's salary.
Happy shopping and I think this sofa is exactly what you are looking for!!

BTW, while on this site look at the Cindy Crawford Woodrow line traditional set...I went out a few days after the sofas were delivered and bought two sofas, two chair and a half, a chaise and two ottomans. The versatility of the pieces is amazing...brown on one side, a beautiful tapestry print on the other with stripes on the edges of the seat cushions. All of the accompanying pillows are beautiful and so comfy too!!!
Gotta say, I do browse furniture lines both in person and online a lot and nothing can compare to either of these two items!! GO CINDY!!

I ran across a very nice contemporary sofa beds alternative that you may consider. This should be able to fit your family and it has a great design. Best of luck in your search!

Thank you everyone for your ideas- I checked all the links. We ended up working with hannah at The Sofa Company. We were able to work off of the base design of the oscar and modify to make create the perfect couch- just what we wanted. I am very pleased. Thanks for the recommendations and making my search a success!
