NY Good Questions: Are These Chairs Hot or Not?

2.28chairs.jpgHello AT,

I have these chairs, but I am not sure if they are cool or not.

I would love people's suggestions on whether or not to spruce them up.

Thanks! Paul

I think they are a great shape. I would have them reupholstered in a great color, like a bright yellow or orange. But I would keep them for sure!

Hot. I'll take two if you don't want. :-)

The chairs are great. It's the table I don't like.

Good bones. I'd recover in white or a bright bold color. I don't mind the table at all.

Keep the chairs but pair them with a different table.

I think you need a pedestal table - saarinen type. Like the DOCKSTA from IKEA. I think CB2 has some thing like that too.

Get an estimate on how much reupholstery would cost...then take that money and buy a great table.

Chairs are great. Pair them with a wood (a dark walnut would be good) rectangular parsons table.
I would position them three on each side of the table and leave the head and foot of the table empty.

Definitely hot. I think they look great as is but I agree that reupholstering them with a bright color would really make them pop. I thought of red when I saw them. But they look great as is too. If you dont want them I'll take the other four that *heather leaf* doesn't take :).

The chairs are cool, and so's the table, but they're not quite hanging together. Before you redo the chairs, try styling around them first, to see if you can find a way to pull the set together, and show them off to best advantage - e.g., window treatment (mod curtains? textured shades?), cool minimalist centerpiece, even painting the walls. Then if that's not enough, you could move on to reupholstering.

JV is right. Chair = hot (no need to recover, if you ask me) Chair Table = not hot.

Don't reupholster if they're leather.....they look like they're leather! I would try to get some kind of stain that would darken them a bit and give them a bit of a rustic look. That will look great with the modern legs.

And I agree about not liking the table.

I'm with the others. I think the chairs are pretty cool, but not paired with that table. If you are going to spend the money to get them reupholstered, I think the chairs would look a lot sleeker without the tufts.

I am imagining them to be cold in the winter, and hot and sticky in the summer.

I like them both but not together. Theres too much glass and steel in the picture. I'd go to a wood table of some kind, or otherwise provide softer contrasts in the space somehow....

i'd keep the chairs and change the paint. put them in an area where they'll stand out, instead of trying to recover in a new color.

I like the chairs and I don't think I would do anything to them- unless they are in bad condition or a different color in person. That table though doesn't belong with those chairs.

The chairs are fantastic. Retro, classic, you can make them work with any decor. The table could use an up-grade or DIY project though.

I like 'em.

But a bright color is going to make them look "dinette" if you're not careful.

I agree, pedestal table would be better. I'd go for a new table and the chairs in tomato, Pantone, bright red, or that table and a light aqua/blue for the chairs, to take in the glass and the skylight. Actually, on reflection - I prefer the second idea!

The whole thing would merge into that bay window, and look yumm.

I like the chairs as they are, including their color. However I agree with what others have been saying about the table.

Keep the chairs as is, if they are leather. The leather has a lovely caramel color on my screen. (You can clean leather gently with facial wipes and buff with mink oil paste). The tufts/buttons are very cute. They look like little pairs of eyes. Def keep them. I don't like too much cold color in interiors, but that may be just my northern location speaking. So I would ditch the table (sell it) and look for a nice scruffy wooden table to pair with the chairs. Preferably a round or oval one. I'd put something red or orange on top as well.

Chairs are hot - Table is not.

These need to be around a pedestal table with a chrome base.

These chairs would be SOOO sexy if the rest of the area around it were decorated like AT Chicago's Silver, Grey, and Caramel den: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/scavenger/assemblage-scavenger-041649

You've got the caramel!

Listen to Alina's mother. If you have to ask strangers whether you should like your furniture, either you secretly want an excuse to dump the chairs, or there's someone in your household who wants them gone.

Great chairs. Problem is everything is virtually the same color in the room. These with a black granite counter or ebony floors become the start of the show...Also, the $9.99 ikea table does not help.

They are great, table is bad... I don't think a round or rounded table works well since it plays off the space-age vibe of the chairs too much. And the frosted glass and aluminum thing is pretty unpleasing and was supposed to die when then 90's ended. It would be better to pair them with a squarer, darker wood table for contrast in color value and style. I'd probably mix them with an antique table or something that offsets their period.

It also looks a bit tight to have all 6 chairs bumped up together in that space...

'...I am not sure if they are cool or not'?? What kind of question is that?? can you define the word 'cool' for me? and why do you need a bunch of people you don't know to tell you whether to keep them or not? I just don't understand.

HOT CHAIRS. Not hot table. I agree that you could maybe move two of the chairs to another location to declutter the space. I'd get a retro table with bright coloring.

thanks for the comments guys. just to clarify, i dont have these chairs yet. they have been offered to me. the chair covering is made from faux leather. i did not like the table as well. but they come together as a package. i was considering putting the chair together with the white oval table they sell in ikea.
i am moving towards getting these chairs.

Is it me or do chairs with those types of bases look like office board room chairs?

Put a speaker phone in the middle of the table and you're set to go!

they would be very cool with a wood table. i could see either parson style, or a nice sturdy farm house type. and burgundy walls.
