NY Good Questions: Chair That Can Converted into a Bed?

12.5futon.jpgHello AT,

We'd like to find a chair that converts into a small bed or chaise, and the closest thing I've been able to find is this futon chair from Ikea.

We'd prefer a real chair (as opposed to a futon) that would be comfortable for reading and of course doesn't take up too much space.

Has anyone seen (or does anyone have) something like that? This would be for sleepovers in our child's room, so the bed will be used far less often than the chair.

Thanks! P.

I think Danish designer Flemming Busk is the champion of "sleeper" designs. He made the Twilight Sleeper Sofa for DWR (which is incredibly comfortable in all three positions). But he's also got the Cord, which starts as a chair...I haven't sat on it, but it looks nice and Softline is high quality:

There are tons and tons of things like this, many of which you would never guess are sleepers. Ottomans are also available that convert into sleepers. Just google "chair sleeper," note that if you really want a comfy sleeping experience you will need to go into the "chair and a half" size.

If you're in New York, then try Carlyle. They are fantastic quality, but a little bit pricey. But hey, you get what you pay for. They are handmade in NJ or something like that, not China.

We got our sofa from there and couldn't be happier. When we went to the show room, they had a few ottomans and chairs that converted into single beds. They have a clearance section on floor items too.

Cost plus World Market has both Chairs, Loveseats and ottomans that convert into a bed and they look pretty nice. My friend has a loveseat sleeper and it is pretty comfortable and you would never know that it is a sleeper looking at it.

BO concept has an ottoman, and while I can't find it on their website Natrona has a line of sofa beds, that also have chairs that turn into sofas. I don't recall the name of the line, but one of the models is Bogart. Though... may be a bit pricey for a child's room.

I don't have any experience with these, but LL Bean has a collection called "Ultralight" that might do the trick for the occasional sleepover. Here's a link to the sleeper chair: http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=ultralight-sleeper-chair&categoryId=23539&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&parentCategory=4811&cat4=502203&shop_method=pp&feat=4811-tn

Ballard Designs has one. Not cheap, though.

The New York Times answered this question last year in the "Room to Improve" column. Here is the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/24/garden/24room.html?_r=1&n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/Subjects/C/Chairs&oref=slogin

Dear God, just *don't* buy that Ikea futon. I slept on that thing for a few weeks while couch (or chair-bed) surfing and I got bruises on my hips and shoulders from the thin mattress and oddly spaced slats just from laying on it.
