NY Good Questions: Chunky Wood Low Platformed Table?

12.7woodtable.jpgHello AT,

I'm in love with this Maison Coffe Table that is featured in Domino magazines.

The a nature wood block, chuncky looking will warm my contemporary apartment a lot. It is listed for 875 dollars at HD buttercup.

Does anyone know anything similar (chunky wood without any leg, low platform) for a friendlier price? Thanks! Uma

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

You could definitely make one out of butcherblock.

This is a bit more of a hands-on project, but IKEA has a great butcher-block countertop

And they'll cut it to size at the store. If you have a drill, you could get it cut into three pieces (top and two legs), when you get home, drill through the top on opposing sides, and drill into the legs. You will have a raw edge, unless you have a mitre saw to make the angle with. But really all you need it screws and a drill. Or even pegs and a drill, just don't drill all the way through the top.

Check out White on White in Tribecca. they had some similar tables last summer and were great looking in person.

This one is slightly more budget friendly, although it's still not a bargain...

Umbra has a table called Nestle that looks similar, but is not as low:

As mentioned, Ikea has 1.5 inch thick butcher block in Beech (blech) and Oak. I'm making an informal dining table out of it right now. FYI, the oak is incredibly difficult to cut. I have a Porter Cable circular saw with various new blades, and I was unable to get any cuts that were even remotely clean. Nevertheless, with Ikea doing the cutting for you, this would be an easy project. Plus, then you get to say, "Oh, you like my coffee table? Thanks, I made it myself."

You could easily make that for less than $20 in supplies and that includes a $5 tip to the wood-cutter-dude.

I agree with all of the others.
This is something you could easily make yourself, of any kind of wooden plank of your choice.
They can cut it in pieces for you, so you only have to glue (or screw) the thing together.

There is a more expensive version by Arco Meubel with an amazing matte finish (esp in walnut).
