NY Good Questions: Furniture Restoration Spots in NYC?

6.19table.jpgDear AT,

I picked up a really great Heywood-Wakefield coffee table on Craigslist this week -- or at least, it WILL be a really great table someday.

For now, it needs to be refinished.

The damage seems to be mostly superficial -- no deep scratches or anything.

Can you recommend a furniture restoration spot in New York that can help me out?...

How much would something like that cost?

Has anyone out there attempted to refinish a H-W table themselves?

Everything I've read so far tells me it's a little tricky.

Thanks! J

I've had work done by STEPHEN LOPICCOLO LTD -- he does amazing restoration work!!! 646-228-4228. He's in the Gowanus canal area in Brooklyn.

Furniture Joint in NoLita (http://www.furniturejoint.com/) is mostly upholstery/reupholstery, but I think they do refinishing too. If you email them with photos of your table, they'll get back to you with an estimate.

I've been thinking of refinishing some chairs myself, and while I haven't given it a shot yet, this looks like a good reference: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=HomeDecor/RefnWdFurn.html

Make absolutely sure that the person you hire to do the refinishing has done Heywood-Wakefield pieces before, and that they fully understand the process of restoring them.

HW furniture has an opaque stain that is notoriously difficult to restore. You can read more about it here:

There is a DIY kit that you can buy, but I have no personal experience with it:

I have a few inherited HW pieces that I would like to have refinished too but I'm in Portland, OR. Anyone have any suggestions of a great refinisher in the Pacific NW?
