NY Good Questions: Rug Ideas for Our Living Room?

7.17room1.jpgDear AT,

My husband and I could use some suggestions for a rug.

Our sofa is taupe-ish and our chair is chartreuse.

We currently have an off-white shag rug that had the rug for 2 years now and it just won't stop shedding.

We've finally had enough and are looking for a replacement.

I'd love to get another light colored rug to contrast with the dark wood floor, but it will be getting a lot of traffic (and eventually a baby will be in the picture), so it seems a bit impractical.

Any suggestions for a rug that will work in this room and can stand up to constant traffic?...

Would some sort of jute or sisal work here?

We'd also like to keep the price in the $300 or less range.

Thanks! Sasha

If you're concerned about alot of traffic and/or potential stains then you might want to consider something striped or with patterns. I bought this Mohawk area rug two years ago because it was affordably priced and looks really great against hardwood floors (although my floors have been lighter colored wood than yours): http://www.rugs-direct.com/rugsdirectory/results.aspx?N=4294941058 4294945036 125&color_id=121378

I have two cats and despite a bit of scratching and a few hairballs, it still looks pretty good!

Consider getting something bright instead of light. maybe a bright orange?

How about making your own area rug out of capet tiles:
http://www.flor.com/
Easy, quick, recyclable, all colors you might want and for $300, you can get 24 tiles of most styles, which would make a 3m x 2m (10"x6.6") area rug. If a tile get's messed up, you can wash it in the shower or, worst case, replace it.

I agree with the "something bright" idea... the chair needs something to balance it...
I'd probably look for something in the blue/green family... like the color of the links on this page.
