Similar Style Dining Chairs?
Good Questions

9-28-chairs-question.jpg
Q: I can't get enough of the dining chairs I saw in Jennifer Chused's modern New York apartment. I've been haunting craigslist and ebay ever since I first noticed the chairs and I've not seen anything like them. I don't even know what type of furniture they are in order to search for something similar. Can you help? Thanks!

Wish I knew...those chairs are fantastic. Not to mention the rug. Does anyone know where that rug (or similar) can be found?

felixjones those are the closest I've found! Too bad I'm in NC :(.

I've had luck searching "art deco," but nothing quite as fabulous as in the picture. I particularly love the curved back legs.

kmbsmith,

I think the original article (linked in the post) says the rug is tibetan?

I would venture to guess that the chairs are vintage. I would just keep your eyes open for a modern set. I actually found some great art deco dining chairs on Scavenger.

Here are the dishes. The dinner plates are $20 each, which I don't think is half bad.

I'm curious about the rug too...

I sent off a note to Dwell, which may not get any reply, but if you check their website...:
http://dwellshop.com/b2c/ecom/ecomEnduser/default/default.aspx

Scroll down, and on the left, in the NEWS section, there is the link to the pdf file of the article. The pdf doesn't have the pages organized into pages, they're layered.

But by zooming in, it says that the chairs were reupholstered in the patent leather by her.

Says:

"A former fashion stylist, Chused is likely to reinvent the piece, updating a vintage chandelier with contemporary-style bulbs or reupholstering staid dining chairs with patent-leather seats."

The dining table was literally found in a field, according to the article. She also says that virtually nothing is just bought from the store.

Also mentioned is that she favors furnishings from the 40's. That may or may not include the chairs.

ohhhhh, that was my other guess was patent leather! I thought it was either that or Ikat. It is definitely a new reupholstered job. I bet they were found in some second hand/vintage shop (circa 1990's a la reproduction 1930's inspired) there are so many different "things" on the chairs that the are unrecognizable as a specified place in time. A little bit of this and a little bit of that, so they can't be worth much, for sure they are not museum quality. I would just find a cute shape that is appealing to your taste and have them upholstered in patent leather with nail heads! that's my suggestion.

Thanks, everyone. The search for the "perfect" chairs continue. (Although I am buoyed by the possibly of picking them up for a song in a second-hand shop rather than paying and arm and a leg for brand-new!)

Has anyone seen that rug in a cheaper version? The rug at the rug company costs thousands. Thanks!
