New York, NY

Mon-Sat 10-6, Sun 12-5

2005_9_7_housing1.JPGReaders say: "great finds!" & "Always find good used furniture and household products at great prices." Clearly, our reporters have empty apartments and need to nest, but if you are looking to get rid of things, Housing Works is one of the main places to call.

2005_9_7_housing2.JPGThe Thrift Stores take clothing, shoes and clothing accessories, housewares, home furnishings, books, jewelry, art, and furniture and The Cafe takes books and recorded music only. Donations may be made at anytime during store hours, reciepts for tax purposes are given, as well as store credit up to $10 for taxi fare if your donation required a taxi.

Pickup by truck can be scheduled as well - pickup days are weekly - and there are guidelines for what you can donate beyond each item being clean and in good condition. For example, solid wood furniture only (no pressboard). Call Donations Coordination Department at 212-366-0820 extension #2. And call early, 'cause they get busy.

Love HousingWorks esp. the Upper West Side location.

I also discovered "17 @ 17" on my way back from the Barneys Warehouse Sale this weekend. Looks like it could be another very good thrift store. (17 W. 17th St)

I just discovered "17 @ 17" yesterday on my walk from the Housing Works on 23rd St to the Housing Works on 17th! I love it!

Also another cute thrift store: Vintage on 3rd between 22nd and 23rd - super nice and knowledgeable staff!

Love Housing Works! Shopping with purpose. Guilty pleasures...not so guilty! I frequent the upper Manhattan store on Columbus, but I've been to the others as well. You can find wonderful designer duds and antiques for great prices. Also, the online bidding option is the best! Happy shopping...
