Global Green's Holy Cross Project in New Orleans

08.23.holy_cross.jpg

It's modern, it's green, and it's contributing to the rebuilding of the Ninth Ward in New Orleans. It's the Holy Cross project by Global Green. The project was just announced and it's backed by actor and architecture aficionado Brad Pitt.

The first house of the project is underway and progress shows the house will generate its own electricity with solar panels and is being built with green products. Brad Pitt sponsored the design competition that spurred the project. The completed project will include 5 single family houses and a multi-unit building of 18 residences.

This project has been underway for quite some time. This is the first construction but was preceeded by a design contest judged by a panel including our newest resident Mr. Pitt. I am really excited about this progressive move in our sometimes traditional to a fault city. Thanks for keeping New Orleans on your radar!

"Green building “doesn’t have to cost more. It doesn’t have to look like a spaceship in the desert.”

Okay, that sounds like a noble objective, and I'm glad that they have chosen a distinctly modern direction architecturally. But it seems a bit disingenuous when the proposed budget for 18 apartment units plus a community center comes out to 10 million dollars! That's hardly what I consider "affordable" or sustainable economically, especially for a depressed area. When the main objective is to create affordable housing for thousands of displaced citizens, green or not, this all strikes me as being a bit decadent. With that kind of money they could have easily created many more housing units.

I feel for the residents, three years from now, when something goes awry with their solar-powered *anything*, and Mr. Pitt and paparrazzi have moved elsewhere.
