The Ample Sample contest was conceived as a way to promote creative re-use of the many thousands of carpet tile samples shipped to architects and designers. The instructions for the winning designs are available for free to others. The 2008 contest recently concluded and one of the People's Choice winners was Evan Gant's Green Screen, pictured above...
Green Screen uses a standard carpet sample size (13.5 x 18), requires simple tools and very little work to assemble, perfect for an easy DIY project. Green Screen can redefine any space, and is ideal for separating work and living areas in a home. Carpet samples work especially well for this task since they provide sound dampening qualities and an interesting visual presence. Green Screen can be constructed to fit in a wide variety of spaces and can make good use of 150+ carpet samples.

What a GREAT idea!
I love that room divider.
What I am not getting from their site is WHY the carpet samples are not used? It says "Download the blueprints and/or instructions to transform carpet samples destined for the landfill into a unique conversation (and conservation) piece."
I know that there are some places that donate the samples, to places like the SF-SPCA. The carpet samples are ideal for the animals to lie on, play on, and if they become soiled, they can be disposed of.
And I have seen some carpet samples available for sale to the public.
But I would be more than happy to take several stacks of samples myself. I just don't know where to get them. If they are going to be thrown away anyway, I could give them a good home for awhile.
I use them the same way the SPCA does, and eventually the cat will yak up something on one of them. I try to get as much use out of everything that I can, but I really can't afford to keep buying them...and if I buy cat scratchers, those get shredded too.
I certainly can't enter any sample contest if I can't get a hold of samples. Nor can anyone else. Ideas on where to get them?

I think most of the entries weren't actually made - they are just CAD renderings and didn't require that the designers have a set of samples.

To paraphrase Steve Martin - "First, get a million carpet tile samples.........."
