iSol Solar iPod Charger

07.09.iSol.jpg

Here comes the sun. Charge your iPod free from wall outlets or car chargers and use only solar energy doing it. That's what the iSol does. It's a flexible solar panel that's made to connect to Apple's iPod.

And it costs less than $40, so there's not much reason to not be using one of these things. The sun provides us with thousands of times more energy per day than we could even use, so let's make more use of it where we can.

Has anyone used this? I use a Solio (that costs twice the price), and was a bit disappointed at how long it takes to charge, and it's inability to get any charge when not in very bright, direct light. I end up using the Solio as an iPod charger much less than I had planned.
I'd love to hear a review of this one.

The Solio is definitely overpriced for casual users.

The picture above is actually NOT the iSol but another product by the same company.

It would be interesting to have ratings on different solar products for recharging batteries and small electronics.

Any negative effects of leaving one's ipod in direct sunlight for several hours at a time on a daily basis?

Beat the Heat

To avoid battery degradation, keep your iPod away from extreme heat (such as leaving it locked in a hot car) and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. You wouldn't do this to your pets or kids—apply the same care to your iPod. Ideally, try to use your iPod in places that are around room temperature.

To answer your question, Shawn, I have the charger in the window all day storing the charge, and take it out to charge the iPod at night. You don't have to leave your iPod in the window with your charger.

This might be good on long, daylight hours flights. If you are sitting by the window there is usually plenty of sunlight; might be able to juice the charger pretty decently.
