Look! ExpandOS Packing Material

10-3-expandos-1.jpg

We've written about Geami Packaging in the past (the laser-cut paper that Crate & Barrel uses for shipping), but we received a package in the office the other day that used a packing material new to us. ExpandOS are a fully recyclable option for protecting your stuff during shipping — and we're kind of obsessed...

Unpacking the box, we immediately noticed how tightly the ExpandOS had settled and interlocked with each other — it was actually somewhat difficult to unpack the box! The ExpandOS are extremely lightweight and fully recyclable along with newspaper and cardboard.

From the ExpandOS website:
ExpandOS were specifically designed to adhere to the laws of physics by utilizing all three sides…all six corners and all thirty-eight fingers! After the space-saving Expander sheets are converted to many small 1 1/2-inch ExpandOS, and put directly into your box, a dynamic protection solution is activated...As the ExpandOS are activated, they immediately seek out tangential surfaces to stabilize your product in a turbulent environment. ExpandOS continually adjusts during transit to provide a reliable, safe haven for your product. ExpandOS patented shock absorption allows your product to rest easy with minimal movement...Each energized ExpandOS defines and organizes itself and its neighbors within the space around it to provide the most energy-diverting and intelligent packaging solution today.

Our package was from Heath Ceramics. Has anyone else experienced ExpandOS? What other companies use them?

I haven't seen ExpandOS used in anything I've ordered (yet), but it looks like its a stable material and its great if its lightweight.

One thing I've noticed with Geami (and probably now this) is that the folks who pick up the recycling think it is not recyclable and leave it on the curb. I've taken to taping a "YES, THIS IS PAPER" note on Geami when I bundle it up.

Heath Ceramics uses these ExpandOS. They are brilliant! We fill a bin with them and when we have enough leave it out on the curb. It goes with the cardboard everytime.

Illuminations, the candle company, uses these. They're a little sharp so be careful unpacking your box.
