Similar to marquetry, the tape takes the place of a thin veneer. By carefully covering the entire surface of the furniture, it becomes "new" again. This is an economical and crafty way to save damaged pieces. Via: dezeen.

I remember back in the seventies doing this with masking tape and shoe polish. Nothing this intricate, but it brings back memories.
