Plastic Bin by Jieyu Design

Don't throw away plastic bags, throw away inside of plastic bags. This Plastic Bin, designed by Jieyu Design, is made of used plastic bags...

The plastic bin is made with many layers of plastic bags. By ironing them together, the thin plastic bags gains structural strength and am able to stand as a dustbin. In Singapore, plastic bags are used as carriers of products and then as trash bins hung at the back of doors. By giving the plastic bags more structural permanence, it's secondary function as a trashbag is reinforced. The ironing treatment is also a way of consolidation of plastic bags for future recycling.

Plastic bags are a reflection of the society that it is found in. This bin is made by plastic bags I brought over from Singapore to the Netherlands. The graphics on the bin can only be found in Singapore and by looking at them, one gets a hint of life in another country. A small silent battle against globalisation.

I'd argue that buying plastic bags from Singapore via the Netherlands is a sign of globalization, not a battle against it.

This is a good idea that could definitely be improved upon.

Many people already use plastic bags like that as small trash receptacle liners... hardly need a 'designer' to think of that!

It seems like the problem is that it looks exactly like the sum of the parts. I use plastic bags for trash inside other bins, not on display.

I am one of the "them." I reuse my bag and hang it on the front door so as not to have garbage overnight in the apartment...it discourage laziness and vermins.

wait, i'm confused by the sentence, "The ironing treatment is also a way of consolidation of plastic bags for future recycling." does that mean the bags are biodegradable? or does that mean they're just being saved for future purposes?

the positive: the bags were brought back here to be reused instead of filling a landfill (at least not yet)

the negative: the bags will someday fill a landfill.

but such is the way things are. i am just so sad that cloth bags aren't being utilized as much as they could... :-(
