The Greenest Thumb! Contest: B & R's Herbalicious

Name: Brian & Rebecca
Location: Washington, DC
Size: @10x15
Favorite Resource: yardiac.com and Kmart

Pitch:

"My girlfriend Rebecca and I just bought a new condo in Columbia Heights/U St area of Washington DC where we have a great little patio. We’ve been working on it for a couple of months and I think we’ve put together a nice little outdoor space! The main use is for growing herbs because Rebecca loves cooking with fresh herbs...." We’ve planted a few little grasses (not sure of the names) and flowers including cala lilies and gerberas. We’re trying to train some honeysuckle along the top of the patio fence. It’s only a couple months along, but it seems to be doing nicely. Right behind the fence is the back entrance to our 20 unit condo building so everyone entering from the back can enjoy our space! We love grilling and eating out on the patio when it’s warm out.

The herbs we have are: basil, rosemary, two kinds of parsley, thyme, oregano, sage, mint, watercress, and chives.

Those two small trees are Japanese sky pencils. So far they are doing pretty well. We don’t get a ton of direct sunlight so we try to get mostly shade/part shade plants.

We got most of the pots from Kmart and the planters came from yardiac.com. We spray painted the planters silver to stand out a bit more. There’s also a nice grill in the opposite corner by the steps from our unit.

I know we can’t win any prizes, but we just wanted to share a little slice of green in the city!

Funny story – I actually dropped the camera on the patio when trying to take pictures a couple weeks ago for the greenest thumb contest. Luckily I was able to get it fixed in time so I could send you some pics! I just took these last night and can probably get some better ones during the day.

Love the site!

I think it's great...beautiful and functional.

Great work and garden.

what a lovely herb garden you have! i am envious of the selection of herbs, there is something so dreamy and romantic (and also functional) to me about being able to cut and cook with herbs you grew yourself. it must smell great!

my only suggestion, add dill! but that's only because it's one of my favorite herbs. : )

Um, since when is D.C. part of the NYC Metro area? Not that it isn't a lovely balcony. It's just doesn't qualify. But good luck with them herbs!

Where did you get the table and chairs from? Can you email me back at dara . erck @ gmail . com?

Thanks!

Please tell where you got the table and chairs and the planters with the silver s look.

The table and chairs actually came from Kmart. So did most of the ceramic pots. The metal shelves came from IKEA and we got the planters from Yardiac.com - they are the duchess trough planter for $36. We then spray painted the metal silver. I forgot to add that we got many of the plants from a great local place called Garden District on 14th st. in DC.

Looks awesome - such a difference from that day that you moved in! Can't wait to see it in person. :)

Your patio looks very nice. I, too, love growing herbs and using them in my dishes. A small potting bench would look nice on your patio if you have the room.

Love patio/container gardening. My only suggestion, add some color to those pots! Jazz it up a little! Pick up some of the colors of the patio!

I think your patio looks great......Wonderful idea to grow your own herbs. Very rewarding for everyone when you cook with fresh ingredients....good for you as well. At least you know they won't have any additives like pesticides........I would like to see a little bit of shade or trelis. That would make it complete
