Talking with the ladies at Century Florist the other week brought up an interesting topic: plant fashion. In their many years of business they have seen many styles come and go. In asking what the style of today is, they agreed that flowers that can stand on their own, rather than in a cluster, seem to be popular now. And as the fashion changes, flowers that are in vogue this year may be bumped out in the next year by something else. It is subtle, but not too unlike the change in our furniture tastes.
The younger generation likes having one flower in a vase. Years ago no one would have imagined that curling bamboo stalks would be so popular, or that a single orchid bough would suffice.
I also admit to enjoying a single stem. Right now I have three dahlias in a vase looking over my shoulder as I write. Their three blossoms are bowed in agreement; there is a contemplative power to this style of arrangement.
So where do you go to see how flower fashion goes with the furniture that is also in style these days? How do you match your furniture and some green? How do you choose an appropriate vessel? Its nice when those that supply the furniture also take care to showcase some plants. The Room & Board showroom on SoHo does a nice job of keeping plants in their store year-round. I was there this past weekend and noticed the vessels, which also looked nice without flowers, arranged throughout the store. They have their own visual stylist to thank, who even finds ways to make a single leaf look good in the right vase. He also has a service come in to care for many of the larger plants and trees. Overall the arrangements they have are all within the realm of possibilities for the busy apartment owner. Next time you are in the neighborhood, stop in and admire their thoughtfully chosen plants. I've been looking for those coconuts with the sprout (see slide show). Where can I get them?! Ligne Roset's showroom had them in SoHo and they were really beautiful.
I love pics 8 and 9. I'd like to make something like that for my place this fall.
Would love to know what the names of some of these plants are.
i often admire the way they use potted plants at places like Room & Board and wonder if they actually do maintain them under those conditions or whether they just go through them really fast, like cut flowers. were you able to ask the plant stylist about plant identification, care & maintenance, etc.?
