We have found another hardware store that makes us happy. Sid's Hardware is large and plentiful. There are so many people working there, that one wonders whether it is the benefactor of some act of patronage, rather than a pawn in the capitalist hamster wheel, that is the reason for its endurance. Their prices are competitive with the looming Home Depot and the atmosphere is so much more pleasant. Their stock includes anything from hammers to light bulbs to everything you need to redo the plumbing in your home...
They have an extensive selection of hardware as well as materials, housewares, lighting supplies, and heavy machinery. To top it off, we found our favorite salesperson. (We hope he's still there!) His name is Jack. Whatever we want to do, he helps us do it. When we told him once that we had a project consisting of drilling many holes into plexiglass, he not only supplied ample advice to stave off the classic pitfalls of such an act, but he gave us a little piece of plexiglass on which to hone our skills. We conquered the task and we have Jack to thank.
Go to Sid's. It is worth your while. It is directly across the street from the exit of the second stop into Brooklyn on the A train. They are open 7 days and they deliver.

I live close to Sid's but I don't go there anymore and would rather walk a little further to some of the hardware stores on Court St by the cinema or take the subway to Lowe's and get a man with a van for my load of purchases. After reading the 2005 article on Sid's and the way Sid's is today - I can't help but think the 2005 article is talking about a different store.
Rude employees, never smiles, price 2x - 3x the cost at Home Depot and Lowe's, outdated merchandise sold as the latest new models, and ad nauseum....

My husband and I love Sid's-- they are flexible and deliver for super cheap. The wood-cutter downstairs is fantastic-- he cut planks of wood for a shelving unit we were constructing, odd angles and all...

My experience with Sid's has been completely hit or miss but probably resembles ACanOf more closely. I have found the staff, especially the cashiers to be very curt. I'll go but only as a last option.

I disagree with the rude employees. I've been shopping at Sid's since 1997. They have been extremely helpful in helping me get what I need for the projects I do in my apartment.
Their christmas supplies rock, too, by the way!
