Rats! Rats! Rats! How is that for a headline? Reviewed in yesterday's Times, Robert Sullivan's new book on Rats is not a detailed history, but a "quixotic and often arbitrary meditation" on the rat, and attempts "to do for rats, what John McPhee has done for oranges, rocks and birch bark canoes," which results in an "intriguing" book. Two small, interesting facts: rats may have sex up to 20 times a day, and one pair can produce 15,000 offspring in a year. Yikes. MGR
