Looking at some of our favorite New York City Hotels, we're glad to see The New York Times just published a look at the history behind the west side's Jane Hotel. The sailor's boarding house that dates to 1908 was recently renovated by Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode — the same team behind The Bowery Hotel and The Maritime...
The Jane has retained the original room sizes — which means the bathrooms are still communal and down the hall. But they've updated them with a pseudo-Victorian glamor. The Jane's rooms start at $99 a night, a great deal for NYC.

Tiny, but what a lobby!
Love the renovation!
(and the bathrooms look like what we did in our first house)

Sweet! I like the renovation. I think it's sad when people take old buildings with lots of character and make them shiny and ultramodern. This, IMHO, brings it up to date but still retains some of the dim, smoky feel of the old hotel.

I'm with you UdonNoodles. I love this. Next time I'm in NYC, I'll forgo staying with the fam and crash here; the beauty makes up for the same space.

I have to say that I recently just stayed at the New Jane hotel based on the review in the NY Times this past weekend. The bar was definitely worth the trip, but unfortunately, I highly recommend against spending the night here. The bar is more of a club and it was so loud, many of the guests, including us, complained about the noise - until 4 am in the morning. Also, I woke up around 3:30am from the club noise, looked at my bed, and found bed bugs - two to be exact. They immediately switched me to another room, but I had already been bit. I really hate to give this place a bad review because it's a beautiful hotel and historic, but it really was the worst hotel stay I've ever experienced.
