HGTV's Design Star: Shabby Chic Hotel Suite
Boston

ds305-cast-clive_w609.jpg

This week's challenge had the remaining six designers working in 2 teams of 3 to redesign two suites in the famous Opryland Hotel using country music star Sarah Evans' style as inspiration. Also, we finally got to see the contestants' real hosting abilities...

ds305-sara-suprised_w609.jpg

Armed with $15,000 and 26 hours of work time, the teams met with Sarah individually to discuss her style and desires for the Opryland suites. She requested feminine, southern, shabby chic comfort and expressed her specific love for antique doors. There was (refreshingly) little drama this episode and a whole lot of shopping.

Jennifer led one team, faux-finish paintbrush in hand, with Matt taking a back seat and Stephanie in charge of shopping (frantically). Trish led the other team and managed to wrangle Tracee into cooperating while Mikey kept everyone on the POA (or POV? Can we just say that we love that he's a cop?).

We know shabby chic usually involves light green paint but why did both teams have to use the exact same paint color of Sarah Evans' living room? We agree that Team Trish did a better job creating a complete, "finished" space but we were partial to Team Jennifer's bedroom with that luscious bedding, calm colors and the lovely framed wall headboard uniting the two beds into one space - very a la Matt. Also, Team Trish's dining bench mixed with chairs was much more successful than Jennifer's mixed chairs. We like mixed style chairs but those four were heavy and too disparate, didn't mix well.

Possibly Tracee's first positive contribution to the competition

Ultimately, Sarah Evans chose Team Trish's suite. If only Stephanie's couch had fit through the doors... always remember to measure ALL the doors that the furniture will have to fit through. Maybe it wasn't because of the couch but Stephanie went home and we agree with the decision. She was a great supporting designer but didn't deserve her own show. More images of the rooms here

What did you think of the hosting trials? Who do you think could handle a show of their own?

The results are in! We'll be interviewing Matt here on AT in the coming weeks. Please comment with questions you would be interested in having Matt answer!

Ugh - Tracee is a horrible host. I think they're keeping her around for the drama. Nobody is knocking my socks off, but Trish, Matt and Jennifer seem to do best on camera.

Anyone else feel like mint chip ice cream after seeing that room. So much mintyness.

I think that Team Jennifer was a bit literal, such as every chair mismatched, and didn't follow through with finishing touches. A rugs and other amenities would have gone along way in the living space.

I did like their bedroom though.

a rug would look better but i know someone who tripped on a hotel carpet, broke her nose and had a tough time trying to sue because it was outside the U.S.

i would really appreciate if they changed the title of the show to HGTV decorating star because they aren't moving any walls around, changing plumbing or really looking out for the code requirements required for the spaces being "designed". They are just picking out paint colors and furnishing the place like it was a home but this past episode was a hospitality space which requires certain parameters around flammabilty of textiles and framing of furniture...etc... sorry about the soapbox.

manueln - as a hospitality designer myself I completely agree.

I totally agree with manueln - there is no regard for code or actual design. The show is about space planning and decorating and drama.

I remain underwhelmed. I can't believe Tracee is still on my screen. So far this season has been a real disappointment...

This was one of the better episodes. But the bar is very low....

This season is so horrible, it makes me wish I had tried out! I would probably win!

i saw this and was pretty amazed at how well the winning team did. i love the show, but i think most of the people totally suck, so i was happy they did a good job.

These rooms just look messy and distracting to me - not something I'm looking for in a hotel room.

I love the show, and agree it isn't the best, but I still love it. MICKEY V for the win!!!

The best part by far was Sarah Evans sitting in her shabby chic explosion of a home and describing her style while wearing an outfit and make up that made her look like she had a walk on role on Dynasty back in 1985. It was an audible and visual trainwreck of nearly epic proportions though not nearly as bad as the Opryland Hotel itself.

There are no stand outs this season. No contestant seems to have a vision or personality to host their own show. Vern has become mean spirited. Cynthia needs to take speech lessons. Does anyone ever know what she's talking about? And the other judge is who?

While I liked the old door headboards and would even consider doing it myself, I couldn't stop thinking about lead paint chips on the pillow -- not good for a hotel.

Oh, and by the way if you haven't been to the Opryland Hotel during the holidays -- go -- it is spec-tacky-lar!

As for 'lead paint chips on the pillow' hilllgirl -- Rachel Ashwell founder of the Shabby Chic style would had the rough bits sanded a bit and then varnished over so that the patina and the age of the piece would remain in tact. As far as a winner is concerned I think it goes like this...they already have their white male with David, their black female with Kim, they need a white female...so pick one- 'cept that crying ass Tracee...and they need a black male, but Scottie was too old. Let's see if my prediction holds out...I don't think it matters how America votes in the end.

Double Yuk and Barf! Instead of Shabby Chic , how about Shabby Sh*t. Laughing here seaside, I thought I was the only one who noticed the drag queen makeup.

Had to add one more. I've seen trailers better decorated than this.

I totally agree with manueln. The show definitely should be renamed DECORATING STAR because there's no actual design going on.

There is very little to get excited about this season.

I also agree that it's a show about decorating. To be fair, the technical aspects of actually designing a space would possibly put the show in a different budget category, and they probably just want to focus on what is more easily captured and what more people can relate to - the decorating aspect.

Buncha hacks! I just went to the website and saw the video clip of the episode. I agree with the folks mentioning the show needs renaming to "Decorating Star".

This is one definition of Interior Designer:
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos293.htm

And in some states, it is illegal to call yourself an Interior Designer if you are not licensed.

I figure I am in trouble if I was looking for a job and didn't know what some of the things are that I would be required to do, as an Interior Designer:
http://jobview.monster.com/GetJob.aspx?JobID=73416046&JobTitle=Interior Designer&cy=US&vw=b&AVSDM=2008-06-30 17%3A01%3A00&pg=1&seq=10

I already know I'd be over my head doing a hotel room. What is required for safety? I don't know. It's going to be different for a hotel room that will have a variety of people staying there, than it would be to figure out the needs of an individual family.

For instance, I would want to know how much the hotel staff would be able to do...like can they care for leather furniture? Are they able to deal with glass topped items? To clean, to maintain. Would they remove the covers from slipcovered sofas? How often would those things be cleaned? How "clean" IS clean when it comes to hotel rooms?

I mean, uh...well...um, like people have sex in hotel rooms. :::blushing:::

And some people have sex all over the hotel rooms. So, um, do you have to take that into account? Are there some kind of "sex sturdy" requirements? Because there should be.

I mean, what if you were leaning on that one table that has the window panes on it, and the wood was not sturdy enough to hold shifting weight, and the person's arms and hands went through the window glass and they got all cut up and lots of broken rotting wood in their arms.

Uh, OK, I'm going over here to be all embarrassed now.

I dunno about this episode. I like that both of the rooms came out pretty decent, the right person went home and thank the LORD for giving them some decent coin to spend on their rooms.

With that said, I thought both rooms weren't especially original. They were pretty much shown a space (Sara Evans') and told to design a room based on her likes. What the teams did instead was just try to copy her room as much as possible, hardly a professional designer. The rooms turned out well because they were shown a completed space.

The whole sofa thing was silly- so they couldnt fit it in the elevator or the stairs. I am SURE that a hotel of that size has to have large freight-like elevators for laundry, etc. I am sure a simple request at the front desk would have solved any issues.
